Singer have been lucky so far, what with adding yet another X-Men wannabe into the mix (Nightcrawler), but doing so, he gave Cyclops some benchtime (he wasn't that effective a leader or a physical member of the X-Men on the field, role-wise).

It will be interesting as to how many will he add into X3, and how will that affect the certain members of the original cast (Halle Berry may not return).

I agree, though. Perhaps it is too early to compare VH with LXG. I'd probably pick up LXG DVD, anyway. Perhaps it is better as a direct-to-video.
