D&D 5E Variant 5e?

That’s an entire different argument.

You started by saying that other RPGs cost too much, and listed the total cost of a pile of third party supplements rather than the cost of a common complete $20 RPG.

I pointed that out, and that D&D is the most expensive RPG out here, so now you’ve abandoned that position and shifted goalposts and are saying it’s because your local shop only has D&D.

When I now point out the existence of Amazon, what’s the next goalpost?

If you don’t want to play a game other than D&D, that’s fine. Just own it. Don’t make up a series of silly falling No True Scotsmen dominoes to justify your decision.

I already said earlier but you got s arkyvand sarcastic.

You are aware of the broader socio economic things going on outside if your bubble?

Alit of people don't have that much money,D&D and RPGs are still a middle class thing. Middle and upper class tend to make up around 30% of the population now.

Amazon's not a nice corporation and with postage outside a few markets isn't that much cheaper.

So the cost for a book is closer to $50 probably more as non D&D RPGs cost more than D&D.

So what else can you do with $50? Or I'll use an ENworld subscription mine was $8 a month.

It's not far off a subscription to to a streaming service.

A RPG book isn't much cheaper than a subscription to say Xbox live or gamepass for a year.

Now what's better value is entirely subjective but everything else is easier to use.

I can buy a phb or 13 cans of beer and each can is 3.8 to 5.7 (900 mls) standard drinks.

So I can can buy an RPG book, get plonked multiple times, get access to hundreds of games for almost a year.

Plus you're probably going to have to run it and dig up players. There's a better than average chance the book is going to end up on your shelf gathering dust.

So yeah it's not cheap compared to the alternatives like a streaming service, game service a steam sale.

There was a humble bundle of Crusader Kings 2 for $16. All the DLC. Hundreds of hours if gaming.

So yeah a lot if people don't have the money or relative to other stuff on a per hour basis it might not be that cheap either.

This is not mere disagreement. As per the forum rules:

This site seeks to be inclusive, safe, and harrassment-free. Harassment of others, whether by public or private message, is not tolerated. Harrassment means messages which intimidate, threaten, insult, or excessively annoy another person or group, unwanted sexual remarks, comments related to skin colour, gender, gender identity, ethnicity, sexuality, disability, appearance, race, nationality, age, and religion, amongst other things, as well as comments which are intended to suppress the freedom of any person or group of people to be full and active members of our community and the gaming community as a whole, or to hide such characteristics. If you feel you are being harrassed, please contact a moderator.

Bold emphasis added for the behavior you were doing that is harassment to me. I asked you to not reply. I have been polite, and asked you respectfully. In other threads the moderators have stressed that if you are asked to not reply to someone, please do the courtesy of respecting them and leaving them alone.

You have put on your moderator hat (red text) in this post, so I address you as such. I am not using it as a buzzword and I have incredible sympathy for victims of harassment and enormous respect for what they have overcome. In my annoyance I might have jumped the gun too soon? I can admit that. But your responses to my post were not constructive or on topic. They were directly insulting. I am sorry if you cannot see that. I like to think the first was not meant in such a manner (post #41), it it was not until you repeated the offense in post #52 that I felt attacked; even receiving a Ha-Ha like at my expense. Even if your posts were passive-aggressive in nature, they still hurt.

Now, I ask you, sincerely, how is that not harassment by your own forum rules?

Point Lowkey did the exact same thing a few days ago.

I know. I was actually looking for the moderator's response to Lowkey's posts, but I could not recall which thread it was in.

Neither but I think Low-key used a very liberal interpretation of harassment. The posters were disagreeing.

Umbran backed him though.

In the old system though ignore buttons didn't work on moderators (for obvious reasons).

Fair enough I guess. What type of game do you want to play? And are you certain D&D 5e is the right system for it? Fundamentally, the challenge of D&D is resource attrition. You could make it a more difficult resource attrition with some small tweaks, but I don’t think you’re going to be able to make it into a completely different kind of challenge without major changes.
I have been playing 5e since almost the begining. We transitioned our 4e game to 5e about a month after it came out. We have are very happy with it (with a few house rules). However, resource management/attrition is not the focus of our games. In fact, the only resource management my PCs seem to care about is HP and the style of game I am proposing makes that resource more scarce. Now, just because I like the idea, doesn't mean my group will. I haven't run it by them yet.

I don't want to "ignore" him, though. I felt attacked and his posts were not constructive, helpful, or on topic. I have played the following rpgs over the years:

  • B/X
  • BECMI
  • AD&D
  • 2E
  • 3/3.5E
  • 5E
  • d6 SW (WEG)
  • SWSE
  • Gurps
  • Boothill
  • Car Wars
  • TimeTraveler
  • Vampire
  • Werewolf
  • Shadowrun (2E and 3E)

and spent money on them and other single shot one-book RPGs as well. I know others have played more, but that isn't the point. I feel it is safe to say that I am all in favor for supporting RPGs.

To respond "Clearly not." and such is to imply I am lying and is an attack.

If it isn't harassment, then I am wrong and I can admit that, but from the responses I have seen moderators make in other cases, it seems like it to me. Intentional or not.
