I've been checking out videogame fan projects recently, and there are definitely a number of gems to try out.
Here are a few great ones I've found so far.
Endless Sky -- a top-down space rpg (currently on Steam) that is inspired by the classic Escape Velocity series
Angband -- a roguelike dungeon crawler based on the Lord of the Rings
Holocure - Save the Fans! -- a bullet hell roguelike (also on Steam) starring Vtuber characters from Hololive
Ones I'm currently looking forward to:
Dead Zone Revive -- an isometric RTS base-building/extraction (March 10 on Steam) that is a remake of the Last Stand Dead Zone game, with licensed permission from ConArtist Games
Cosmic Frontier: Override (successful Kickstarter) -- a remaster of Escape Velocity: Override
There have been some that also got taken down, like Shanghai EXE: Gensou Network (based on Megaman Battle Network), which got cease-and-desist for attempted profiteering, and the ill-fated Chrono Trigger fan remake Chrono Resurrection, which got a lot of people excited but also attracted the Eye of Sauron in Square Enix's intellectual property department. There is still a YT video atm from back then for Chrono Resurrection:
Please share recommendations or news of upcoming fan projects if you got 'em.
