One adjustment I've seen in (IIRC) Star Wars Revised, but which I'm not sure Unearthed Arcana mentioned (because I don't have it on campus with me), is to have effects which double a weapon threat range instead only increase the threat range by 1. So, a character w. Improved Crit and a keen rapier would crit on a 16+ instead of a 12+. Even with that, Improved Crit is still a very desirable feat under these rules.
