Hello enworld crowd,

I am new to this site, and also a new DM. I haven't played DnD since I was a teenager (36 now).

My play-group also hasn't played since back in those days.

I decided to give it a shot to have some creative outlet and besides, someone has to take charge right? :)

Instead of running a module i'm going right into designing my own world and campaign.

I'm considering chronicling my world and our gaming sessions here in this forum. I would also create a seperate thread where (hopefully) veteran DM's could toss me some criticism, advice, maybe even a compliment if I actually do something slick (one can dream)

This would involve huge walls of text.

I'm wondering if something like that would be too over-bearing.

Thanks for your time,

TooL

Campaign journals are great fun. There's a section of the site for them, called Story Hours. Go right ahead and post away. Just be aware that they're a LOT of work to maintain (I've tried).

You might also look at some of the "running commentary" type threads (There's one for Piratecat's game on some board or other). Or in the Plots and Places board there's a thread on Rich Green's Parsentium (sp?) game that has run for a long time.

Anyway, even if you don't keep up a full-blown thread on your campaign, you can always post shorter scenario questions - you'll get good feedback, I assure you.

One word of advice: perhaps you should take advantage of running a few encounters from a module to get everyone a "refresher course" on the game.

Think of it like pre-season football or spring training.

I did stop by that story forum and skimmed some of the posts. Much more detail than I am going for. I'm more thinking about developing the world I'm creating and displaying my learning process as someone who is doing it for the first time. The only story I would tell is a descriptor of the situation that pc's are coming into. perhaps like a dm writing for other dm's, talking about all that is going on and not just what is experienced.

I may give it a go here and if its moved, its moved <shrug>

I invited the players to come over and do some 'arena battles' to become more familiar with their PC's. I was hoping to speed session 1 along at least a little more. Some made it.

Otherwise, we're already in it.

Welcome to ENWorld and welcome back to the game!

Another option to consider is obsidianportal.com. It's fantastic if you're also developing your own world because you can use the wiki there to provide information to your players but there is also a DM only section for the "secret stuff".

Which edition will you be running?

I am running 4e. The main thing I really liked about 4e was that every class gets a 'toy' when they make a level. Instead of just the casters.

I also played A TON of the dnd mini's game and was familiar with some of the 4e concepts.

oh and hey, thanks for the link. I'm going to check it out tonight.

Ok, if you're running 4E I would definitely recommend a subscription to DDi, even if only for one month. The monster builder and character builder are just so helpful. You might even get some value downloading some of the adventures and stealing encounters particularly as you mentioned you haven't DMed for a while.

Anyway, I hope you and your group have fun!
