Any time the action mostly revolves around someone alone with a screen, that's the safe bet. Soderbergh's Kimi managed to be pretty good despite that, though.

Actually the best War of the Worlds iteration is 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim but not enough of y'all are playing peak video games so I don't know what to tell you.

Tom Cruise running really fast a lot carrying a screaming Dakota Fanning wasn't too terrible though

The Cruse version did have that great scene with the burning train. People’s expressions of exhausted despair were a very Wells-like moment.

There’s a comics mini-series by Ian Edginton and D’Israeli called Scarlet Traces. It’s set ten years after the novel, with Martian technology transforming society, in many ways for the worse. One day, bodies of young women drained of all their blood turn up in a river, and a retired spy and his right-hand man do some investigating. Things get worse. It’s very bleak and dark, in a very appropriate way.

Oh, no. They are almost certainly not talking about electromagnetic radiation. Because that at least is a legitimate source of energy - you just wouldn't bother taking over the Earth for it. For greatest bogosity, they must really mean data.
