Am I misreading this or is the Warden the only defender who can't actually punish a marked foe who wants to attack his ally?

No, that would be the shielding swordmage (who reduces the marked foe's damage instead of punishing it).

No, that would be the shielding swordmage (who reduces the marked foe's damage instead of punishing it).

However, several of the shielding swordmage's better encounter powers support an attack concurrent with the shielding effect. Transposing Lunge and Dimensional Vortex are notable examples.

If the enemy attacks via an opportunity attack then the speed/shift penalty is a bigger deal. That's how we help trigger the warden's cool stuff. Get the rogue with defensive mobility to do it.
