I really enjoyed this write up and I'm a little sad that there wasn't room for this much detail for all the races in the PHB. There's a whole other thread about how 4E feels like it's missing something. For me, this level of detail; racial feats through epic level, paragon paths, specific racial items and rules; are things that 4E needs to flesh out the bare bones.

If this is what we can expect from Dragon, then it will be well worth it for me. I just want to know when we can expect this level of detail for all the standard races. I'm playing around with high-level character builds and am finding that there aren't enough feats to give them!

Indeed. I thought it was kind of funny that Warforged have a way higher page count than any of the PHB races (race-specific paragon paths, race-specific gear), but at the same time, I thought the article was really good.

I like that the PH is light on fluff.

It allows more campaign specific flavour(s), especially for races.

I agree entirely! I hope that there are (at least) a few pages on each race in the campaign settings. If we're not getting it in the PHB and we're not getting it in campaign settings, then that would be a problem. I guess we'll see when FRCS comes out.

Despite all the "sky is falling" types saying the 4e books was so chocked full of fluff it was strangling their homebrews.

I haven't read the whole thread, so apologies if I'm just repeating things that have already been said. I'm not reading the weapons as components section as allowing dual-wielding spiked chains and whatnot, but discouraging two-handed component weapons, because those would be unwieldy. "You take a -2 penalty to attack", not "You can use this weapon one-handed but take a -2 penalty to attack".
The one thing I found odd was going on about both stat bonuses going towards the Fortitude defense being a balancing factor, and then giving them a bonus to Will defense.

cheers

The bonus to Will defense is a way of partly compensating for the 'bad' stat modifiers. Eladrin get the same thing.

Regarding two-handed weapons attached to one hand, I've already spotted my first piece of Warforged cheese. Use a Reach weapon, stand behind an ally, and use Commander's Strike to give him an attack. The -2 penalty to hit doesn't matter, since you aren't the one making the attack roll, and you still get to keep your shield on.
