Warlock Energy Substitution?

Under the section on Sudden Metamagic Feats in CA, it says that the Sudden Feats can be used with spell-like abilities BECAUSE (important) they do not require modified spell slots. That would imply that any metamagic feat not requiring modified spell slots could be used with SLAs. So, is there any reason that a Warlock couldn't take Energy Substitution (or born of the three thunders, for that matter) and apply it to EB invocations?

No, that doesn't work. Regular metamagic feats require you to use "a spell slot of the spell's normal level." Sudden feats avoid the spell slot issue altogether.

The reason is that in general metamagic ONLY works with real spells. The eldritch blast specifically says "metamagics do not work with eldritch blast". Later, the text on sudden feats contradicts this, but ONLY for the sudden feats. So sudden metamagic is the ONLY metamagic that can be used with warlock invocations and even that is a little suspect.

On the other hand, would it be overpowered to imagine there to be a feat like energy substitution that worked for spell-like abilities? Not really. If you want to use it that way, do it.

The only other problem with this is, it wouldn't work with all of the Invocations. Because invocations do not have descriptors like spells do. For example, Hellrime Blast causes fire damage but doesn't have a fire descriptor which is essentially what you are changing with Energy Substitution. On the other hand, I could see you using it with Wall of Perilous Flame because that specficially mentions it works like Wall of Fire.
