No, I'm picking up what you're putting down. We can just factor that into our balance equations.
My thought about the actual abilities is to make a list of mechanics that could be affected, then decide which mechanics we want to target, and then start spit balling specific abilities, leveling, and whatnot.
Thank you! I prefer Gambit Die, but if it not being plural would bug people that's fine.Done.
Changed; still in orange.
Number of "mettle points" in table in black.
Done. Table changed, in black. Same with level 2.
Naming issue-
Is it gambit die, or gambits die? Going ahead with gambits (you get different kinds) die. If you want singular, let me know.
1) Agreed. I'd say no more than 5, tops, in the core class. I'm fine with a couple more than monks get at level 2, but any more than that is too much.1). I would definitely rather just a few core uses of ki, rather than an entire menu. Especially since adding additional uses of ki seems an obvious tool for subclass building, just like monk subclasses. My only caveat is trying to avoid an obviously superior use of the points, like the Monk’s stunning strike.
2) I wasn’t clear, but are you proposing sacrificing attacks to always entail a ki point cost, or to receive a boost when the ki point is spent?
Not sure how well Valor plays with all of the main archetypes, whereas Mettle is more universal. Instead, I'd like to speak of Sir Braveheart's Presence, and him resting to restore his Mettle. No need to mention points outside of describing the ability.I’d prefer something like Valor rather than Mettle - then we can talk about Martial Presence as Sir Bravehearts ‘Field of Valor’ and have him recall his ‘points of Valor”
Also I’ve been thinking about the Marshal Gambit being keyed off attack action and wondering how that affects the Tactical Marshal who stands back from the battlefront, or indeed a goblin marshal who actively uses disengage to distract an enemy in order for her allies to get an advantage (I suppose that could be a use of mettle/valor)
If I run a game with Mettle it's going to be made pretty dang Metal. One thing you might want to think about is homophones.
We've already got the whole Martial / Marshal.
Now add in Mettle / Metal (how metal is that!).
It might scan well when reading, but it can be more difficult when you're talking about it - as people tend to do when playing D&D.

i think we might want to table this one for now, actually, and just focus on getting features in place. I can see your point Lowkey, for sure.If I run a game with Mettle it's going to be made pretty dang Metal.
I see no problem.
