Weapons classed as Simple, Martial, or Exotic by region or culture

Anyone seen it done in any d20 products I've missed?


It seems logical that the list of what weapons are Simple, Martial, or Exotic should be somewhat cultural.

Some of them are complexity issues, but many seem cultural.

IMC I designate certain cultural norms. Sometimes this involves giveing everyone a proficiency with an exotic weapon. I had not thought about just making it a martial weapon or even simple though. That will be a definite help.
For instance in a long forgotten Dwarven Realm the principle weapon is the urgrosh. So I gave everyone an EWP with it. Now I think simply making it a martial weapon for them would be better.

Thanks arcady, I think you are quite right in your line of reasoning. I think that a weapon should not be reclassified as simple unless it is easy to use untrained, but many exotics could be martial if it is a common weapon. This will be setting specific so I would doubt a product other than a setting would have it.

One of the players in my D&D game was making up a campaign world with strong cultural differences between different human countries, with few non-humans. I was thinking of something allow those lines, limiting certain weapons and feats by culture, with the different cultures having different Simple/Martial/Exotic lists (smaller than the standard lists) with a Foreign Training feat to allow access to foreign stuff from a particular culture.

I do this as well. Certain countries and regions are known for specific types of weapons, while others would have no experience with them at all. It all comes down to adding more flavor to my campaign setting.
 

i did a limited version of this in my last campaign.

to distinguish between different cultures of each race, sometimes i'd allow a culture to treat a specific exotic weapon as a martial weapon.

there was a dwarvish culture that had the urgrosh as a martial weapon, a halfling culture that treated the halfling skiprock (from S&F) as martial, and a gnoll culture that had the two-bladed sword as a martial weapon.

i didn't bother to totally remake the simple/martial/exotic lists for each culture, but that is definitely a possibility if you want to accentuate the differences between regions or cultures.

hey, here's a simple way to implement it: if you are using the idea of regional or cultural feats like in the FRCS, you could put in an EWP as one of the region's feats. it doesn't give anyone in the region the weapon for free, but it suggests that there will be a higher percentage of people than normal that know how to use it.

I like the idea of certain weapons being "martial" in specific regions instead of exotic. I also like the idea of making certain exotic weapons available as regional feats. The difference is if the weapon appears to simply be odd from a Euro-centric viewpoint of if it really is a bear to even figure out what end to point at the baddie.

So a 6-shooter would be almost unusable in Middle Earth, a martial weapon in the wild west and available as an exotic weapon feat to 20th century characters.
 

There was a thread akin to this idea a very long time ago it seems.

If you're going to make certain exotic weapons martial, you should make an equivalant martial weapon exotic, otherwise everyone will be using the exotic weapons. For instance, the urgosh could be martial, but a Longbow (not useful because of range limitations) and Greatsword (too large to swing effectively in tunnels) would be exotic.

i hadn't thought of the balance issues, LightPhoenix, but i definitely see your point.

i think just adding the EWP to the regional feat list would be a good way to go from a balance perspective. (mainly because it doesn't really change anything -- they still have to spend a feat to use the weapon, and anyone can take the feat if they want.)
