Weitz Brothers making Elric movie?

Of course, it doesn't matter what we want. Hollywood will cast some currently popular pretty boy--my guess is on Orlando Bloom, if this happens any time soon. :\

I hope not. I can't stand Orlando Bloom (and it has nothing to do with the fact that he looks like my fiance's ex husband)

Now I do like your idea of James Marsters! I think he could do a great job with the role of Elric and I'd love to see him on the big screen.

See, that doesn't work for me. I like Jeremy Irons (though I still haven't forgiven him for Profion :p ), but I think he's all wrong. He's too old, he's not gaunt enough, and most importantly he's just got the wrong sort of personal gravitas.

Elric's a Melnibonean- they're pretty much ageless, so age really isn't (IMO) a factor. Not to mention, James Marsters isn't exactly a spring chicken. He's a pretty interesting choice, though, and I could see it.

Sure. But someone who looks old--and while Irons looks like a "well preserved old," he still looks "old" ;)--doesn't give the impression of "ageless." Marsters isn't a child, I agree, but he doesn't look his age.

But yeah, I'd love to see it, at least in part because I'd love to see him in a leading role.

If you want someone believable as ageless and a drug addict then Kieth Richards is your man. Sure he looks old but then he hasn't aged in the last 30 years, he has had the same picked look for a long time.

My real pick, as odd as it might seem, is Macaulay Culkin. The reason I pick him, and the reason he may not want it, was his roll in Party Monster. After seeing that he has the pale pretty boy look and can do drug addict well. I also see him as the opposite of an action hero, I know he would look really out of place weilding a sword but then that is what Elric is.

I thought I read on Moorcock's boards once that Paul Bettany was the author's own favorite. Bettany even already has experience playing an albino (Da Vinci Code) :D

Macaulay Culkin and Jonathan Rhys Meyers I could also see as being good choices.

That's... that's.... pure genius!

Especially if Culkin invests Elric with a bit of Michael Alig (that's the protagonist of Party Monster, right?).

And the last thing an Elric film needs is interior monologue! Elric's interior state can be completely and totalled described by good art direction.

I am very intrigued. I was always more of an Elric --and Corum et al, including Jerry Cornelius-- fan that Conan. And by 'always' I actually mean 'when I was fifteen'.

We were talking about this in my 'Return of Sword & Sorcery Cinema' thread a year ago (http://www.enworld.org/showthread.php?t=162276). So it's not really an Empire exclusive!

People who don't obsess about this the way I do might be interested in an update:

* Elric is obviously still moving along. But there doesn't seem to be much real change since this time last year, except the Golden Compass will soon be out the way. Still, it's got to be good news the project is being talked about in Empire, it looks sure to happen.

* Solomon Kane starts filming September and - rather appropriately - looks to be the first to make it to the screen. More details on the director's blog (http://www.michaelbassett.com/pages/solomon_kane_main.htm).

* Red Sonja is happening and looking at 2008. Discussion is still going on around who will strap on the chainmail bikini and tread the jeweled thrones of the earth under her knee high boots.

* Bran Mak Morn is also still in progress for 2008.

* Conan's still in development hell. Latest new courtesy of the Conan forum: (http://www.conan.com/invboard/lofiversion/index.php?t4481.html).

This week Paradox Entertainment released their annual report for 2006, and in it the CEO mentioned some things about the progress with Warner Bros and the Conan movie. The CEO was disapointed that the movie had been delayed for this long, and that they were considering if they should extend the agreement with Warner Bros.
Later inte the text the CEO mentioned that they were _hoping_ that the movie would go into production in 2008.

For context: this time last year they were hoping to start filming by now. This is actively being worked on (good news), but has had so many false starts that you can't get your hopes up (bad news).
