Well, I now feel dumber.....

People watch it because mtv tells us to, just like much of american culture we like what songs they tell us to, TV shows, movies, I find places like this to be very refreshing in light of public opinion. Automatons!

TV is seriously getting worse, dumber, and more offensive lately, at least here in the States. Yeesh. I used to watch all kinds of good and decent TV in the 80's and early 90's, what gives? Now I watch at most a few hours each night, like an hour while eating dinner and another hour or two late at night watching anime on Cartoon Network/Adult Swim, and on saturday nights. Anime is better than anything else on TV nowadays anyhoo, except for the Simpsons (the show by Matt Groening, not those other Simpsons *spit*).

Oh, Enterprise, Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, and Battlestar Galactica occasionally manage to keep my attention for an hour or so, too.

Not on a regular basis (since I'm online more than I'm watching TV), I watch "Malcolm (the reruns), the Simpsons (occasionally), some MASH (earlier today when the niece and nephew were on the comp while their mother had to go to court for a friend), the news (I DO try to keep up with what's going on), Star Trek, Timecop (caught one ep yesterday on Sci-Fi), Dukes of Hazzard (when I DO remember it's on....), some crime stories on CourtTV (Investigators), COPS (the ONLY "reality" show I watch), America's Most Wanted, JAG (when there's not a game and it's not preempted for something else/when I remember it although I don't like the fact Chegwidden's gone! GRR! DAMMIT!).

That's mostly it except for random stuff thrown in like music videos, football, ACC basketball (GO TARHEELS!! :D )...

Yer leaving out the only reason for TV

CNN man!

That's it for me except the occasional music video on MuchMusic.

You get the video 411 on wassup. Thats all I use a TV for.

I recently bought cable. I use it for the occaisional movie, the History/Science channel and Futurama, Enterprise, Myth Busters and Conan O'Brien. I need to hurry and buy my tv tuner so I don't actually have to watch anything during its schedule time.

It is reaching a point where I am actually tempted to swear off television.

My TV is on when I'm watching:

American football (usually only Ravens games, playoffs and Super Bowl, which I usually watch at the pub anyway)

the O's struggle for mediocrity during the first half of the season - then I can't stand it anymore (again, usually at the pub for this)

a DVD

playing GTA SanAndreas or playing Madden 2005

a great special on PBS

a breaking disastrous News event or other live action political stuff (not mutually exclusive)

And that is IT. I've been disenchanted with other offerings on the TeeVee since 1995.

I wish Nielson would call my house.

I walked in on my son watching some show where Mini Me from the Austen Powers movies was trashed off his mini @$$ and urinating on the wall in front of Peter Brady and some other washed up celebrities. Meanwhile, Star Trek Enterprise was in the process of being cancelled.

Welcome to The Dumbing Down of America. It sure explains a lot over the last few years.

Gawd...I feel your pain...

I love TV....but not what passes for entertainmnet anymore. I was without cable for a couple months while I recuperated from my auto accident, and I realized that network TV is just as vast as wasteland as most cable. And while I'm glad to have cable again, if it weren't for the History Channel, National Geographic, Animal Planet, Sci-Fi, and the ability to watch Law & Order all the time, I'd pitch it entirely.

I used to enjoy Discovery and A&E, but I can only stand so many minutes of rednecks and gearheads screaming at each other while building yet another motorcycle before I want to throw my crutches at the screen.

rant rant rant...

You apparently have never watched reruns of shows from the '50s. Or the '60s. Or the '70s. Or... ;)

There are *more* stupid shows on TV today, not *more stupid* shows. And they're differently stupid. But TV is no worse than it's ever been. The pain of earlier crap has just faded from y'all's memories. :)
