Poor support? FR was effectively the defacto core setting for way too long with the PHB telling you to read basically every FR book.

I said poor support for FR outside the Swordcoast, very important distinction, the Swordcoast is well supported in 5e, it's the rest of the Realms WotC has horribly neglected which just absolutely wrecked and threw away the good will the Sundering created and ending the novel line just made it worse.

How could WotC stop him from writing novels? Is there some sort of “if your not using our IP you can’t publish anything” clause in some secret contract?

Is the movie based on Greenwood’s work?

I was referring to stopping him from writing Forgotten Realms novels specifically.

which is wonderful, but it doesn't really address the fact that Ed Greenwood getting a raw deal from WotC.

Well, no. Because distribution is separate from creation. And distribution doesn't come for free. Everybody between you and the audience must get paid for their work, too.

Yeah, it was TSR that gave him the raw deal, not Wizards.
