The Archmage is ridiculously powerful--especially for sorcerers, who have spell slots to sacrifice in abundance.

For fighter types, the Singh Rager from Oriental Adventures is quite good. Their barbarian-style rage, pounce ability (which allows full attack at the end of a charge) and built-in haste make them fearsomely powerful. Plus, the requirements are very easy to meet (+7 BAB and two feats).

Rage Mage combined with Dragon Disciple is better. You get so few spells as a rage mage that the levels of DD double your # of spells and all the new spells are at your highest level. That allows you to combine good fighter progression with good spell progression which is always hard to do plus you aren't crippled by anti-magic fields and dispels like a lot of other classes.
