What are your table rules?

hmmm....table rules...oh yeah, don't lean on that end of the table the leg is broken! :D

seriously, what we have always done is: whoever is hosting makes the occupancy rules, food, cleanliness, etc. The dm makes the game rules and decisions. the group as a whole decides who is welcome and who is not.

Other than that, have fun and try to act your age...not your shoe size.

We've never written things down, nor quantified things to the point some have. I suppose if we had a high turnover of strangers, then we might. It's just never been needed, but I can see being in the situation where it would be needed.

Most things are a reaction against past bad behavior on the part of people no longer with us. Some are just common sense.

No alcohol. No drugs. Smoking is done outside, in case we ever have a smoker again, and you should take a few deep breathes while you're out there to clear your mouth and lungs. Drinks in one place are for everyone. Some people have to have special drinks, so don't put the special drinks in the communal drink place. We don't snack, but several people stop and get something to eat, then bring it on. It's cool; we usually visit for a time before we start gaming.

Wow, I guess there are a whole lot of tables out there where my friends and I just wouldn't fit in. I wouldn't want to join any group with such highly codified table rules, makes me feel unwelcome.

I game with friends, we are friends and treat each other as such, which eliminates 95% of the need for rules out there. I've got little interest in gaming with total strangers.

My rules, they aren't written anywhere, but everybody in my game, or joining the game is told them:
1. Any spell/feat/class/item outside the 3 Core Books, XPH and the Players Guide to Faerun has to be approved by me case-by case. BoED & CW are likely, but still ask first.
2. If I don't have the book, it's not in my game. I've got lots of books and between games you're welcome to look through them for ideas. If you want to play something I don't have, buy me a copy of the book, or at least bring me a printout/photocopy of the relevant parts, and I'll consider it.
3. Please design your PC to be at least marginally compatible with the rest of the party. This means no Evil PC's (ones turned Evil by curses or the like are going to be cured or become NPC's), Chaotic Neutral ones only allowed case-by-case, and generally don't make your character such that it will start major fights with other characters.
4. If at least 2/3 of the PC's aren't in attendance the game is cancelled. We might run some RP sessions or side-quests for players who are there, reflecting stuff done in the downtime, but nothing big. We'll probably just order pizza and watch a movie though.

Hi, Jeff! :)

I believe that people should be on time to game. I believe that players should jot their initiative on the corner of the battlemat near them in numbers big enough for everyone around the table to read. I believe that people should try to be ready to take their turn when their turn comes around to them. I believe in the square and not the hex, the small of a woman's back, the floating DC, the circumstance bonus, good scotch, that a lot of online fan fiction is self-indulgent, overrated crap. I believe solo-dungeon delvers foolishly act alone and that parties should almost never split up their group. I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment recognizing GM's Day. I believe in the critical hit, B&W interior artwork, opening your DDM boxes without shaking them, not looking up monsters during the game except those you handle or summon, and I believe in long, slow, deep, soft, wet kisses that last three days.
