What area in Greyhawk is good to start a campaign?

Thanks for the suggestion Merric!

Is the Wild Coast an actual country/area or is it a large geographic area that encompasses various countries and city states?

It's the coastline and area between the Woolly Bay (south of the City of Greyhawk) and the Lortmil mountains. There are a number of large towns in the area - the Slavers used to work out of them. No one ruler controls the area.

About 300+ miles of coastline and about 150 miles inland.

To quote from the 1983 boxed set:
"The western shores of the Sea of Gearnat have long been called the Wild Coast, for the region has been a haven for malcontents, dissidents, demi-humans, humanoids and the outcasts of other states. It is a fair but not particularly fertile area - rolling country side interspersed with woodlands, fens and scattered clusters of dwellings. PArts of the Gnarley Forest, all of the Welkwood east of the Jewel River, and Suss Forest are considered as being in this region. The Wild Coast remains a territory comprised of petty nobles, robber barons, guildheld towns, fishing and forest villages, freebooters, mercenaries and displaced persons of all sorts. This is due to the remove and isolated position it holds, its lack of resources, and the fact that it has never been a desirable position strategically. Portions of the area have been under the control of Celene, the Prince of Ulek, the Gynarch of Hardby, and the Free City of Greyhawk at various times. The inhabitants, being of a mind otherwise, have always managed to regain their freedom.

"There is no question that the Wild Coast is known throughout the Flanaess as a place of sanctuary, albeit a highly dangerous one, filled with adventure at the very least. Its racially mixed people are well known as mercenaries and adventurers themselves. The area gives rise to many outstanding clerics, fighters, magic-users and thieves. Legendary natives of the Wild Coast include such persons as Mordenkainen, Robilar and Tenser, to name but a few.

"Tales relate that somewhere within the Suss there exists a lost city of the Old Suloise - from which the Jewel River gained its name. It has never been found, and the legend is highly doubtful. Since the Pomarj has been in the control of rapacious humanoids, the southern portions of the Wild Coast have been less than wholesome in any event, and expeditions into the Suss Forest have not been attempted of late for obvious reasons."

The early stages of the Gygax novel, "Artifact of Evil" treat with an expedition to find the lost city of the Suloise. :)

In the Greyhawk Wars, parts of the Wild Coast were severely ravaged (and looking at the latest map, Eldred, Fax and Badwall are now in ruins). This was the doing of Turmosh Mak, a half-orc general from the Pomarj. In 591 CY (the date of the Living Greyhawk Gazetteer), Turmosh Mak controlled the southern part of the Wild Coast, but I think that he is no longer there in 595 CY (the current Living Greyhawk year) - I could be wrong, however.

Originally the major towns were:
Safeton (4,600), Narwell (2,900), Fax (6,700), Badwall (5,200), Elredd (8,400).

Cheers!

It got absorbed by the Pomarj for a while; look under that entry in the LGG.

You'll see it properly marked on the Dungeon map of Greyhawk.

Cheers!

It is to the South West of the Domain of Greyhawk.
As for countries, I seem to recall that the major towns such as Safeton have increasing come under the sway of the Domain of Greyhawk with the southern part of the Coast partially under the control of the half-orc general Turmosh Mak.

For starting a 1st level campaign in a generic Greyhawk, using only the 3.5 core rules (PHB,DMG, MM), what area would you recommend?

Saltmarsh, of course! They even have a sinister secret that's great for first level parties. ;)

Well, there's always the village of Hommlet. The Temple of Elemental Evil is close by! (I started many a 1st edition campaign there....)

Currently running a campaign based in Tusmit/Ekbir. Lots of fun with the arabian feel of the governments and religions in this area, while my normally medieval Europeon style PCs get great role-playing out of the different cultural styles.

I ran the Burning Plague module out of a small mining town in the Verbobonc area (near Hommlet). I can't remember the name of the town, but it was on a map of the area originally published in one of the Oerth Journals.

If you search for Verbobonc, you will find a couple maps of the local area, including one from the Living Greyhawk site.

Also check out the Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil messageboards on Monte Cook's site - it has plenty of links to resources, including a fan-created write up of the city of Verbobonc.

If you want a back-woods sort of feel, you could start in Ratik. Relatively unpoulated, nearby forests and mountains, hard to get anywhere else from there...

My vote goes to Hommlet, too. :)
