What can you tell me about living in/around Baltimore?

Ah, lovely Balmer. Nice town, mostly. Was stationed at Ft Meade once (though technically on "detached" duty -- nothing spooky).

I prefer the surrounding countryside myself, though, and would probably choose to live in Carroll County if I worked in Balmer. We're just selling our home in Fredneck now.

The in-laws run a jewelry & craft shop in Mt. Washington village, and my brother in law runs a scooter/motorcycle shop in Hunt Valley.

I gotta disagree with you on this one diaglo. I have never lived in MD but my brother lives in Silver Spring, near DC, and my agency's headquarters moved to Baltimore from NYC 7 or 8 years ago, so I get up there often enough. I've been to Columbia a dozen or so times for conferences, meetings and such and I can't stand the place. It is absolutely the most sterile community I think I've ever set foot on. It's not even Stepford wives kinda sterile-cool. It's just plain bland. On the other hand, I love what I've seen of Baltimore itself. It has a small town feel without seeming confining. It's intimate, cozy and just big enough to be interesting. Camden Yards is one of the greatest baseball venues around, Obryki's serves some of the best crab you'll ever find and if you're into sailing I know a guy I can hook you up with who makes Baltimore's harbor his home and is in a constant search for crew members willing and able to ply the eastern seaboard as far south as the Bahamas. From an outsider's perspective Baltimore is a solid town. I almost moved there myself a few years back. Still kinda regret not doing so.....oh well.

yeah, it was a planned community. every single building was planned before they were built.

no urban sprawl. no new impact on the environment.

sterile is definitely Columbia.

but as an ecowarrior that's kinda why i recommended it.

Seriously. Look at Catonsville. It's not just hometown pride, it's a genuinely nice place to live. And it's literally 10 minutes from BWI. And even though game stores are few and far between, we do have our own neighborhood small-town comic shop.

actually my parents live 10 minutes from BWI. in Severn. i watched BWI expand from Friendship Airport to what it was 10 years ago. and have watched it grow even more as i go home to visit.

Catonsville is a little bit further. unless you are breaking the law with a lead foot.

Columbia has changed- I just moved from there to Pasadena about 30 minutes away. (see my little icon over there on the left?) If you have kids, I would highly recommnd you research outlying communities for crime and school stats.

It isn't as nice as it was, nor as planned- there are some slightly trashy apartment complexes that have been built up there.. and It's kind of crowded now! And expensive. My wife wants to move back, but I'm thinking I like Pasadena/Riviera Beach where we moved and bought a house.

On the other hand- my weekly D&D game still goes on in Colombia, and they have nice gyms and public pools. There was a Wizards of the Coast store at the mall until just a couple of years ago.
