What character would you play, by role?

First Post
If you were invited to play with a group, what character would you play, based on a role that is empty in the party composition?

For me:

Striker - human ranger (beastmaster) with tiger companion, trident and scale mail

Defender - eladrin fighter (tempest) with two short swords and hide armor

Leader - ???

Controller - ???

I'll have to take a closer look at the PHB2 classes and races to see if I can come up with a Leader or Controller I'd like to play.

You?

Interesting question. And this is something I like about roles. You have options, that continue to expand, as to how to fill out a role in a group if you take that approach in character creation.

Right now, I would say:

Defender: Warden. Fighters are my favorite class but I've played them. I've never liked Paladins. The Warden looks interesting and being new and shiny, I haven't seen one in play really and I like the look of the class.

Striker: Sorcerer - wild mage. I love wild mages. I love wild mages as strikers. "I'm awesomely random but I always bring the pain." Good stuff.

Leader: Bard. Leader isn't my preferred role based on the classes so far and never really has been, except as wizard sometimes defaulted as 'party leader' in the old days. Bards look like a lot of fun and I've always enjoyed playing them and coloring up the group with some original goofy poetry and songs. Clerics are fine and I'll play them, but my clerics usually come about as concept first characters, rather than plug a hole types. Warlords don't really do it for me.

Controller: Wizard multiclassed fighter. A dwarf. Racial paragon path. A crazy tough dwarf who likes to run up to big bads, smack them with a maul and then drop close bursts and blasts and expeditious retreat or dimension door to some other crowded area of the battlefield. I also have a couple of cool concepts for invokers I'd like to try out.

If you are starting at paragon level and decide on a leader I would play a half-elf inspiring warlord with righteous brand as your at-will dilettante power. You'll be great at offering to-hit bonuses, saves, and tons of healing. They are also fun to play!

Let's see:

Defender - Half-Orc Fighter
Striker - Elf Ranger
Leader - Human Cleric
Controller - Deva Invoker

All just for the coolness :)

Striker: Rogue. It's all about the rogue, baby. This is my go-to class when I want to play, to be honest. Although Warlock is a nice second string.

Defender: Tough call. There not actually a defender I don't like. When it comes down to it, it would partially depend on the group layout. If they have strong melee presence (Warlord/Cleric/Ranger) then likely I'd go with a Swordmage or Warden. Light on the healing? Paladin. Need a front liner? Eladrin Spearman.

Leader: Bard or Cleric. Although I have yet to really look through the Shaman; the preview didn't thrill me.

Controller: This is a real tough one. I'm very partial to the Invoker's fluff, the Druid's mechanics, but I want to try my hand at making a Wizard to see if they are shafted or not.

Controller- Dwarven Wizard. I like that dwarves are not frequently seen as wizards, but have ties to the element of fire (second to earth really, and not reflected in the rules). Thus a dwarven wizard with lots of fire-based spells really appeals to me (in retrospect this concept is probably done better as a dwarven sorcerer). The bonuses to CON and WIS are ideal for a wizard who will eventually wield both staff and orb.

Defender- Human Fighter. I like playing humans. Fighters are, in my opinion, the best defenders in the game. There's just something iconic about the fighter, especially the human fighter. Sword and shield for the win. My backup choice would be an Eladrin Swordmage with wizard multiclassing.

Leader- Human Cleric (of Pelor or Amauntator). I dig the idea of a beautiful blonde warrior-priestess kicking @$$ with a heavy, blunt weapon, only stopping to heal a downed companion or to call down the pure divine power of her god to melt away a roomfull of undead. Upgrade to scale armor and add a shield for the win. The triple-headed flail is a nice touch too.

Striker- Elf Rogue. My favorite character in the game. I love the mobility; the maxed out DEX. Multiclass as a ranger as much for training in the nature skill as for the ability to get a little extra damage once per encounter.

It'd be awesome to get to play as a player for a change regardless of class or role...

Striker: either Deva Retributive Avenger (kinda hyped I know) or Human Artful Dodger Rogue.

Controller: Druid, not sure about race/build, probably human with some sort of balanced build.

Leader: either Eladrin Stalker Spirit Shaman or Half-Elf Valorous Bard.

Defender: Eladrin Fighter (Spear/Trident+Shield)

I used to like Swordmages but I guess it was due to hype... I'll probably get over playing the Avenger soon too.

The part in italics changes my answer. So...

Defender - What I'd want to play is an eladrin shielding swordmage with a starting Int of 20, wielding a longsword. Great defenses, an interesting secondary role of controller...but can only mark one target. Until you get Double Aegis (at Paragon) or Total Aegis (at Epic), you're not going to be able to protect the party enough as it's sole defender. So, my choice would be a dwarven battlerager fighter with a +3 proficiency weapon, heavy shield, and (eventually) plate armor.

Striker - I realize that strikers are viewed as heavy single-target damage, but I'd like to play a dragonborn sorcerer with dragon magic. Burning Spray for the win!

Leader - Since I already play this in LFR and it fills multiple roles nicely, a balanced elf cleric of Tempus with a fullblade (16 STR, 16 WIS) would be my choice. The character can take care of the standard Leader duties, but also dabbles in the other roles (RRoT for striker-level damage and multi-target abilities like Divine Glow for a limited controller role).

Controller - I'd either play a deva invoker, or leave the role empty and play that eladrin shielding swordmage I mentioned earlier (which has a secondary role of controller). Controllers seem less necessary than the other roles, especially when you have other classes that can dabble in the role (swordmage, sorcerer, etc).

Controller - Elf Predator Druid or Eladrin Wizard
Defender - Eladrin Spear n shield Fighter
Leader - Eladrin Taclord or Half Elf Bard (hell any bard, any warlord)
Striker - Tiefling Rogue dagger and whip spec (a remix of an old demon babe character).

Defender: Half-Elf Hammer Chaladin
Striker: Dragonborn Starlock
Controller: Halfling Wand Wizard/Rogue
Leader: Elf Str-Cleric

show em something special
