What class would you consider the ultimate Jack of all trades

The class thats not Necessarily the best at any one thing, but whos versitility always makes him useful in almost any imaginable situation.

Ranger? Bard? Monk? etc

what say you

There's a nice poem someone around here wrote about a gnome who took levels in every core class. There was a fella who could do just about everything, just couldn't do it very well.

As for what you're looking for, its hard to say. There are a lot of classes that are versatile, but most have a focus on one area or another. When it comes to 100% versatility, I think a rogue would have to win out.

The bard has to win out here, good skills (and gets knowledges were rogues don't), decent fighting, spells (including healing), and is good with people when he needs to be.
 

A rogue with a good UMD check and the right items can do practically anything.

A bard could try, but rogues actually get good combat abilities and bards don't.

Edit: I keep forgetting that UMD isn't class-exclusive anymore. So a Paladin with 1 level in rogue or bard (or the Cosmopolitan feat) who has maxed-out UMD would probably be the greatest combination of indestructability and magical versatility.

By versatility would you include good saves too ? Healing skills ?

Rogues with cure light wands "have" healing but too indirectly. Their saves are weak though.

Overall including survivability (saves), good hitpoints, good attack, some healing and a little magic makes the paladin pretty versatile. The usually good paladin Charisma and high status makes them good dealing with people as well. They only lack "sneakiness".

A well built rogue with UMD is very versatile of course... Arcane spellcasters can do just about anything with the right spell... but they need time to cast them.
 

In a class-based game, the textbook way to create a jack-of-all-trades is to multiclass. Although a rogue is pretty versatile, especially with UMD.

Sounds right. I run one of these, with levels in Bard (Monte's variant in Eldritch Might II), fighter, and a mixture of 3E and 3.5 bladesinger (since Monte's bard uses a variant magic system, we kept the 3E spell progression but switched to 3.5 class abilities). Basicly fufills the above requirements at 12th level. Would like to have a few more skill points, but, hey, who wouldn't. :)
