What did you never like in 3e?

What were the quirks of 3e that always made you go 'huh'?
Multiclassing (particularly when it came to casters), rules for DR, prestige classes (rather than feat trees that allowed your to build PrC type classes from the core classes) and the oodles of stacking effects.

How do you multiclass into/become a Barbarian? That's a culture, not a class, and to me smacks of power/meta gaming (i.e I want cool RAGE powerz for my Wizard/Rogue next level).

When I did play 3E years ago, house rule was it was mandatory at 1st level if you wanted it- no multiclassing into it.

Would it surprise you to know in the 3e playtest, this was the rule for both barbarians and sorcerers?

1. Monk and paladin multiclassing restrictions.

2. Non-stacking caster levels.

To be fair, there were partial fixes or workarounds for these in the supplements.

Mostly just the usual (turning undead, unarmed combat) - the adjusted level nonsense for "monster" characters is a giant dumb headache.
A few of the later more munchkiny feats and stuff of course, but duh.
Not much overall. Still pretty fond of 3.x

I would say multiclassing made me go, "huh" I didn't understand how one could quickly pick up most of the defining aspects of a class in one go.

Hmm... Lots of other stuff is much more rules oriented which isn't what OP really wants. So yeah sticking with that since that is more outside the rules that made me scratch my head.

These aren't quirks, but...

1. The DMG
2. The MM

I hated those two books with the passion of a thousand suns. They were black holes of fun, and why I never tried to DM 3E. It felt like I should get college credit for it.

On topic: Tumble rules! Neat idea, bizarre execution. (I was playing a halfling when we switched from 3E to 3.5E. Suddenly, it was so much less useful :( )

Off topic: There should probably be a companion thread about "Say What?s" that 3e fixed. Whoever put forth the idea to get rid of THAC0 should receive a Nobel Prize!

Grapple, multiclassing, vancian spellcasting. Psionics took care of the last one. I took care of the multiclassing issue. Grapple I learned to deal with (and fortunately play with players who hate the rule as much as I do and thus avoid it).
