my last campaign world had an Arabic / medieval Islamic style going on, so the bards of that world were slightly different. because society frowned upon music and dance as sinful, bards were extemporaneous speakers and storytellers. they'd recite poetry or use highly stylized debate and oratory techniques that provided the same sort of bonuses that normal bardic music gives. one interesting change this required was that all of the bard's Perform-based magical abilities became language-dependent (if you can't understand what he's saying, you aren't affected by it).

i changed the name of the class to rawi -- which, as far as i can tell, means "a storyteller or transmitter of oral literature." for those familiar with Al-Qadim, i had also considered calling them sha'ir, an Arab term for "an enlightened one," but was mainly used historically to describe great poets.

bards usually die to fast to even learn any songs much less sing them....they die even faster if my players try to sing in character.

They all sing Elvis songs, and they all take improved unarmed combat because they got themselves a black belt in Karate unh-huh. And besides with 3e leather looks bards just scream to be just like elvis.

The best bardic performance I ever witnessed was in the first 3E game I played. My friend Brian was playing a bard for the first time and had just got first level spells.

We got into a tight spot and in response, he cast Summon Monster I and was horrified to discover that the best thing he could summon was a badger. Having conjured the badger, he immediately (both player and character) led us in a rousing yet simple chorus of:

Who's got the badger?
We've got the badger!
