What do you use to keep track of you notes?

My campaign has grown so large I have problems keeping control of NPC's, locations and plotlines, with around 600 entries in a bunch of text files. (I bring my laptop when DMing)

What do you use to keep track of everything?

I'm looking for a flexible solution, so far a wiki like TiddlyWiki looks like the best option, but I'm very interested to hear what other people are using!

I use "The Journal" from from davidrm software. I use it to organize campaigns and adventures.

You can check it out here

If you want I could email you a couple screenshots of my current campaign and how I'm using "The Journal"

I use TreePad. (No link, sorry.) It has a tree view on one side, similar to explorer, but instead of a list view, the other side is a document. It can hold lots of things, including hyperlinks, pictures, etc. Then, it was merely a matter of time to figure out the best tree view I liked for a campaign.

Good luck!

Have a good one! Take care!

For general purposes, a wiki is probably the best way to go. They are flexible in the extreme: allowing links from any "node" in the tree to any other, providing all the format control allowed by [X]HTML plus some, can be moved from computer to computer fairly easily (depends on the wiki software), allows for a "Player" section that can be updated by others, and more.

One feature that some wikis provide is access control. For example, you might create an NPC entry for Merlin, then link to Merlin_DM and the access control features would prevent the players from seeing Merlin_DM. This can be useful since the players can take notes on the same page(s) that you do, but without seeing or modifying your private notes.

I think it's MediaWiki (not sure, though) that allows for pictures (JPEG or PNG) to have hotspots on them so that clicking on a picture can link to pages, too. Very useful for a campaign map, obviously... (It could be that MediaWiki was not the first; you'll have to research that yourself.)

I poked at the 2007 Beta. Looks nicely improved. Unfortunately, it's a bit of an unstable resource hog (i.e. "beta") at the moment.

Just thought I'd pass that on.

Tiddlywiki is awesome! I've been using it for a month or so now and I love it. All my notes stored in one convenient htm file. It can then be uploaded to the web, carried around on a laptop or a usb jump drive or whatever. Portable, easy to enter and edit data...all in all a great organizational tool.
