Dragonlance What do you want from a Dragonlance 5e?

A remake of the War of the Lance adventure path - drawing on the originals but not in thrall to them, and removing the Heroes of the Lance entirely (the PCs take their place).

Something like this. Inspiration not an update. I would put a sidebar something like "infinities" where the PCs can replace the Heroes of the Lance but doing so creates a new timeline or something.

Otherwise the WotL is the backdrop.

I would like to see an overhaul of the original series - one which revisits the War of the Lance, with the players playing their original characters, and with a much freeform way of having the events flow. Give the DM a flowchart of what Takhesis' plan is and what plays out when, where important items are and where the information is on who has those items, with maybe a few iconic PCs changed to NPCS (I think Riverwind and Goldmoon work better as NPCs), what the factions are against Takhesis and what their agendas are, some inciting events to draw the PCs into the plot (including "You're staying at The Inn of the Last Home when Riverwind and Goldmoon show up," for GMs who want that) - and notes on directions the plot can go from each of those starting points.

I kind of had it with the Tyranny of Dragons campaign. I cobbled together Draconians and voila. Sure it wasn’t ‘Dragonlance’ I guess but it seemed to hit all the notes.

I'd most like to see an absence of orcs, dragonborn, tieflings, and halflings.

Dragonlance is defined as much by what it isn't as what it is, and the absence of orcs and traditional halflings are a big part of that. I they need to shoehorn in dragonborn and tieflings it isn't the end of the world (does DL need the world to end again anyway?) but they should stick to their guns on the absence of the traditional baddies.

If the book is comprehensive enough, afflicted kender fit the profile of halflings well enough for those who insist on Bilbo's presence in a setting that distinctly and determinedly avoided having him there..

Dragonlance is probably the D&D setting I know the least, so what I would like from a 5e DL product:

  • Something that showcases the setting well for the initiates and non-initiated alike.
  • A clear flavour of... whatever DL does best. Curse of Strahd was pretty good that way. I have a feeling it involves dragons and their riders.
  • A singular and different gameplay from Forgotten Realms/Greyhawk D&D. Beyond a few new subraces, archetypes, and background, give me that DL experience I cannot get from PHB D&D.
  • A way to make the PCs feel relevant despite all the achievements of the books' characters . This one is tricky.
  • Old Dragonlance art was very evocative. It is hard to capture its essence, but in an ideal world, I'd like to feel the same awe I felt seeing Lord Soth's charge, or all those dragon riders, when looking at the game.
  • Similarly - although this is probably just nostalgia speaking - I'd like to feel a late 80s / early 90s vibe.

True. Dragonlance needs to have art that would look awesome on the side of a van.

Give me the death of Sturm Brightblade or don’t bother!
