What does Nerf(ed) mean?

Nerf is actually a very horrible smelling herd animal from the Star Wars Universe.

that's funny. i thought it was a combination of the above. a styrofoam toy whose acronym stands for Not Even Real Felt. as in cool, floppy hats.

Nerf is a kind of styrofoam like substance. They made bats, etc, that kids could hit each other with without hurting them.

Unless you were us. We soaked our old NERF footballs in water and threw them as hard as we could at each others bare arms and legs. In that case they left big red marks and hurt like, well you know .

The first time I recall seeing it used was in when the EQ team started tooling around with game balance.

It predates that, as I know one friend was using it to describe changes made in Ultima Online prior to EQ's release. As I've heard it, his posts to RGCUO are the origin of the current term.

I remember the term "nerfed" being used in the same way back about 13 years ago when I was heavily into MUDs. I've seen it went its way back into things over the last few years, though
