What edition is this?

I was wondering since Dungeons & Dragons d20 not really is a 3rd edition of anything, what edition D&D d20 is, counting from the first D&D-game created by some guy in the seventies?

That is: What edition, counting from the original D&D game, is this? Come on, someone must know.

I think it is the 6th edition but that is counting the 2nd edtion of the second edtion.

1 - Small white box
2 - Three box set
3 - 1st edition
4 - 2nd edition
5 - 2nd edition edition
6 - d20

It's version 13.6

Or, if you prefer, the New Edition.

Nah, you're just yanking my chain, right? How do you figure? The thing is that I'm having this argument and it would really help if I knew exactly what edition of D&D this is.

Are you counting AD&D editions? As D&D and AD&D ran parallell for awhile I'm not sure they are to be considered the same game.

The thing is that there are two "branches" that both came from the original D&D. One is the "Basic Dungeons & Dragons" branch, which went up to 6th edition before dying off - the best version of this branch is generally considered 5th edition, also known as "Dungeons & Dragons Rules Cyclopedia".

The other is the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons branch, which goes: Original D&D -> Advanced D&D -> Advanced D&D 2nd edition -> D&D 3rd edition. Technically, the last item should be 4th edition, but due to various technicalities at the dawn of time (basically, TSR claimed that AD&D was a separate game because they didn't want to pay royalties to Dave Arneson) AD&D was not considered a 2nd ed of OD&D.

Thanks. Only, the PHB says it's based on the original Dungeons and Dragons by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson. There is no mention of the authors of AD&D 2ed...

Speaking of which, who were the authors of 2e?

Not really, one set came out then it branched to basic and AD&D. I did not count the edtions of basic D&D, just the one that spawned AD&D.
