What exactly can you do with a wish?

Ok, so at some point in the future my PCs might be faced with a need to repel hordes of invading demons from the campaign world. They might also have access to the wish spell by this time. Can you wish away a demon invasion? If so, what sort of repercussions would you expect? If not, why not?

Wish can only give you what is listed in the spell description, which I am fairly certain does not mention repeling demon invaders. Perhaps you are thinking about 2nd edition, where the spell was much more powerful.

They could wish for something more powerful, but it'd be sure to have repurcussions which hopefully the PCs would be aware of. Otherwise, the PC Party could keep it stored for counterspelling a Balors wish
