What happens when... (Travel Domain Grappling Question)

Yes, I know, but I was pointing out that the domain power does not grant all the abilities of FoM and arguing that allowing that was IMO better than actually have FoM 1/day (which is what I that the person I was reponding to was thinking). I was pointing out what you say as part of the domain power. I'm not sure I'm making sense, but hopefully I am. :)

Yes, most definitely IMO. A level/per day use of FoM usable automatically as a free action is too much. Allowing it without the grappling component is not. You will be grappled far more frequently than you will be subjected to the other effects.

Hmmm. So I think maybe I misunderstood what your understanding of the domain power is. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems like you're saying that the domain power kicks in when a spell impedes movement such as when you're trying to move through an area affected by spike growth, entangle and evard's black tentacles and only allows you to avoid the reduced movement rate caused by moving through that area. It does not assist you in any way with the grapple checks that entangle and evard's black tentacles require.

Is that what you're saying? If so, then I can see why you think our house rule is unbalanced. It makes the domain power quite a bit more useful.

Oh. And I'd also like to point out (even though it's off topic) that the REAL problem here is that while the magic system is a lot more carefully thought out than it used to be, it still suffers greatly from vague and difficult to decipher writing. WOTC really needs to hire a couple of technical writers to spiff up the core books and make it so that they're more concise. Some of the spell descriptions are just awful.

Yes, that's right. That's what the domain power does, quite explicitly. It only kicks in when necessary, and automatically, without the cleric even having to activate it. Allowing it for grapple checks is just way too much. Even without defenses to grappling, it's still quite powerful.

Well. I wouldn't go so far as to say it's powerful, but it's still pretty useful. A lot less useful against stuff like evard's black tentacles, but still pretty useful to solid fog and it's descendents.
