What have you played?

Which non-PHB class have you played?

I DM most of the time, and as PC, I have pitched a Psion and made a druid instead.
as NPCs with stats, who have had a name, speaking part and either fought for or against PCs
then the list expands to Dread Necromancer, Psion, NPC (expert, aristocrat) Dragon Shaman (turned over to player after Character death) and Warlock

For that matter, where's "I've never played D&D"? Where is "I don't speak English"? Everyone who has nothing to contribute should be able to respond to this poll!

Actually, that information might be useful to see how many folks don't use non-PHB classes and just stick to the core rulebooks. Not part of the original question, but I'd find it to be interesting.

Another mostly DM. I have been able to try out a very little of the crusader, the swordsage, the scout, and the knight. There's a number of others I want to try out, but I'd need to have someone else run.

If I included what I've had in my groups, that would add 12 more classes used (running Aow and ST adventure paths as gestalt, so there are a lot of classes in play).

My last character was a fighter/swashbuckler/scout. He was the master of the spring attack. I was going to take those cool feats in PHB II that allow you to make multiple attacks as part of a spring attack, but a TPK ended the campaign.

The character before that was a fighter who took a level in artificer, but after I decided I didn't like it, House Cannith "reprogrammed" me to be a paladin. Really fun character, that one was.

Psion, Psychic Warrior and Duskblade, and Artificer. My DM was previously very conservative and wouldn't allow any classes from outside of the PHB, but has recently loosened up and discovered that he actually likes the new classes, and when I asked to play a Duskblade he said sure, and he even encouraged me to play an Artificer.

[Edit] Dang, I forgot I played a Shugenja (OA version) for quite a while, too!. Phoenix Clan Fire Shugenja, muahahahahahaha he was fun[/Edit]

Results so far...

It occurred to me that it would be worthwhile to look at the length of time the classes have been published, and compare it to the poll results so far.

Of the relatively new classes (less than 12 months), the Duskblade and Beguiler from PHB2 and the Swordsage and Warblade from Tome of Battle have attracted a lot of players.

Of the older classes, the hands-down favorites are the Scout, Psion, and Warlock, with Psychic Warrior coming in 4th of the > 12 month classes.

The LEAST popular classes that are more than 12 months in age are the Soulborn from Magic of Incarnum, the Spirit Shaman from Complete Divine, the Samurai from Complete Warrior, the Truenamer from Tome of Magic, and the Healer from the Miniatures Handbook.

I've read plenty of criticism for the Samurai and Truenamer classes, and the Healer is obviously highly specialized -- maybe too much so for a base class. Does anybody have an opinion of why the Soulborn and Spirit Shaman attract so few players?

My goal of playing an Aristocrat/Fighter remains unfulfilled at this time. Since I stopped buying supplements, however, I've only gotten a passing glance--if any--at most of these.

I think there's plenty to explore within the core classes. On the other hand, I tried a few non-core classes when I played Rolemaster, so if I got to play more these days, I'd probably give one of them a try.

Yeah. Although I think a separate poll works as well or better to capture that additional info. & I think we've had a few polls like that already.
