What I Learned at GenCon 2004

First Post
  1. If you arrive at a game, and are the only person at the table not in costume, be prepared to be a third wheel
  2. Kilts are cool when worn by Scottish Men
  3. Kilts are still kind of cool when worn by non-Scottish men
  4. Kilts made out of khaki are skirts
  5. Masking tape does not a costume make (warning: picture links potentially not grandma friendly)
  6. Klingons do not move quickly through large crowds
  7. People in funny hats are, by default, irritating people. A person wearing a funny hat does not get the benefit of the doubt on a first encounter. Such a person is required to prove to me that s/he is not a weirdo
  8. LARPing is tempting, so it must be bad
  9. Beer and cookies, though capable of keeping you awake, are not recommended forms of sustenance.
  10. Some people will buy ANYTHING
  11. If you dress up in a skanky costume, don’t complain about men taking pictures of your butt… nobody will have sympathy for you. Not even your significant other
  12. An amazing amount of people can do good Wookie impressions, if sufficiently goaded
  13. There is little that is as depressing as watching a washed-up celebrity beg
  14. People will happily stand in a long line for something, all the while having no idea what that something is
  15. One GM can, through inhuman feats I have no method of understanding, actually manage a game with 40 players
  16. Two GMs can, through inhuman feats I have no method of understanding, completely ^#*$@! up a game with only 8 players
  17. If you make up an excuse for why you’re leaving a terrible game halfway through, rather than simply telling the truth, be prepared to have said excuse invalidated in front of the game’s GM at some point later in the con, and be prepared to be very, very uncomfortable
  18. Not everyone understands sarcastic humor. Some who misunderstand are surprisingly aggressive
  19. A game may be really stupid, but if you had fun it doesn’t really matter
  20. Never, ever, ever, agree to carry someone else’s books for them for “a little while.” When carrying extra weight at GenCon, there is no such thing as “a little while”
  21. Nobody F***s with Marc Singer!

I'm not sure about number 5, I thought it was a pretty good costume :D

11 is so true, but also some seem to be suprised when they get attention for it like that's not the reason they dressed up like that

Yeah. I used to cover a lot of rock concerts and I found this to be a good rule to live by.

Well, now I guess I'd better link a picture for our friends who missed her.

A good list! Though I can't belive that you agreed to carry someones books, "for a little while." That is just asking for a trip to the chiropractor.

I also want details about the Beastmaster chasing someone through the dealer room. Anyone here manage to witness it?

As the now-owner of a Utilikilt, I am forced to disagree.

Anyways, I'm of Irish descent, not Scottish.

[*]Scotch tape does not a costume make (warning: picture links potentially not grandma friendly)

Again, I am forced to disagree. She did a commendable Lelu with that tape. Of course, it is medical tape, not scotch tape. :)

Last year she was "Duct Tape Girl". This was more imaginative.

Mmmm... Beer n Cookies.... Yeah. I tried that too.

[*]People will happily stand in a long line for something, all the while having no idea what that something is

Maybe not happily, but certainly stood in line for a random thingy...
