I appreciate this note. It helps avoid the premise that Japanese must necessarily be "exotic" and nonhuman by comparison to a default human culture.

If the mainland is goblinoids, I'd make the "Japanese" something else entirely. You can keep a strong flavor of Japan being the land of the Dragon if you populate it with Lizardfolk and kobolds. There's a natural hierarchy twixt the two, with the kobolds as the lizardfolk's slaves/serfs.

As for another surrounding race/culture, make Korea full of Gnolls. If for no other reason than I just really dig gnolls.

They have a culture that esteems low doorframes? Besides, nutrition determines height to a great degree, and mideval Japanese nutrition didn't exactly encourage an overabundance of height. Actually, at that time neither did European nutrition. So we had cultures on different sides of the earth full of shorties. Call me heightist, but: Toe not over line.

I find it interesting that Yuan-ti (which is what I voted for) is winning in the poll, but there's little posting about them. What's cool/appropriate about yuan-ti? I picked them based on the whole xenophobia thing that I always associate with medieval Japan.

Plus snake people are just cool.

Yuan-ti (perhaps with some oriental dragon-tainted blood for the royal line) are winning but only by a small margin. It's still a close race between Kalashtar, Gray Elf, and Yuan-ti.

I'd have them be racially Hobgobins, but a different color (orange vs. green?), and a different culture.
