I'm always seeing people saying ranger should be pure martial and artificer should be a full caster. And I've even seen paladin suggested as a pure martial several times.
Ive seen suggestion the artificer should be taken in both directions, martial and fullcaster
i'm in the artificers as martials camp, personally. half the point of them originally was that they couldn't personally cast spells, after all, and they can make scrolls and wands if they really want to cast spells anyway. i think artificers should be focused around making and USING magic items, which they kind of are, but not as much as i'd like. that said, level up probably has my favourite version of a casting artificer (specifically the advanced artificers version, which is basically just a rewrite from the original author of the a5e version of the class), though even then i like it more in SPITE of its casting then anything, even if the casting system it uses is pretty cool.

also i do think an approach to paladin that's focused more around the lay on hands pool and auras would be pretty interesting. like, using the lay on hands pool to smite or create spell like effects instead of having spell slots, for instance. i don't know if that'd make it a "pure martial".

It might be inconsistent with WotC's specific design parameters in their specific version of 5e (commonly referred to as D&D 5e), but it works just fine for my version of 5e (which is mostly Level Up).
Having full maneuvers and being a half caster is overpowered in Level up too.

Keep it full martial by default, but allow subclasses that grant spellcasting.

I cribbed that idea from somewhere...I'll let you know when I remember. 😉
I mean considering how much I despise eldritch knight/bladesinger when compared against previous dedicated gishes like the swordmage, magus, and duskblade, giving the primal gish that same treatment isn't selling it to me like you think it is.
