Well, I haven't gotten through the GMG yet and I haven't played yet, so I don't feel qualified to get up on the HackMaster soapbox.
I did go to the HM forums, though, and found what I thought was the most descriptive post on the game, if a bit emotional. This is what Chris Seconus on the KenzerCo boards had to say:

The complete thread is here.

OK. I didn't post this to start a war over which is the "better" system. I'm simply trying to give Griswold a little more information than what he's gotten so far and I thought this described how the difference in the "feel" of the two systems might be. I think it's a great system, but I'm just an old grognard. Enjoy. :D

Edit: Here's another thread you might be interested in.

You think those threads are bad, you should see the Hackmaster d20 thread.
Apparently d20 is for "snot nosed newbees who couldn't tell a THAC0 from a Save vs. Magic."

Not that we'd want to.

See my post above.

Yea, I did.

Hackmaster is a great game all on its own merits.

But you can't deny that Hackmaster wouldn't have the fanbase it has if WOTC had put out a 3rd Edition that was more like AD&D.

Those of us that love Hackmaster and complain about 3rd Edition are simply trying to state why we love HM. It is because if you take out the humor/pardoy elements it is what 3rd Edition could have and should have been.

Also, everyone tells me that 3rd Edition is the result of feedback from the fans. Some of us are trying to say that it wasn't our feedback that they used. Kenzer&Co did listen to our portion of the D&D fanbase and put out a great product after WOTC abandoned us.

I, for one, am just trying to let the Industry and WOTC in particular know that they are missing alot of sales because they decided not to support AD&D.

D20 is like a major Hollywood flick; Its made to appeal to several demographics and it is made to cater to the massses... HackMaster is like the movie you love, but not alot of people get, you know? The movie you can tell that was made because someone wanted to share _something_ with the world, not the move that was made because the numbers said so...

So basically, by that definition Hackmaster is like the movie Howard the Duck... :D

(I say this because I think I am only one of the ten souls in the universe who liked the Howard the Duck movie. I understand his empathy for a product that is better defined as "cult status" than "mass appeal.")

Obviously some of you have a hard time distinguishing sarcasm also.

I dunno - I left 2e and never looked back. Didn't come back till 3e. I know lots of people like that. We think 3e *is* what it *should* have been.

But hey, just see Col. H's post.

I started to play 20 years ago with D&D, played AD&D 1st Ed (with lots of tweaks) but I abandonned D&D with the second ed., moving to greener pastures and streamlined rules.
I think the 3rd ed. could have been better but it is still a very nice game and an unexpected major improvement, and I just cannot understand the 2nd edition nostalgia except as a joke, which Hackmaster is.
