Well I voted social even AND other. OF course one of the best aspects of gaming is its social aspect, I’ve been lucky to spend all these years gaming with friends (either from outside the gaming circle or forged at the table) and meeting up with them and catching up on how our week is going is a bit part of it.

But the poll is missing a very important option, that’s why the OTHER option. Role-playing for me is storytelling. It is telling a story in a unique form where I do not control the action of the protagonists and while I as a DM set the stage, I am always surprised of where we as a group take it.

My two cents…

I voted movie. Somtimes they are good, sometimes the are crappy, most of them fall somewhere in between. :)

I prefer it to be like reading a good book (a good book being where all the characters and plots fit together perfectly. A GOOD book anyway) everytime, but i've become a realist maybe. LOL.

BTW, is there a reason the poll results are hidden?

I voted social event, book and other.

Roleplaying is hanging out with friends, weaving a story, and a rather obvious missing option: playing a game.

Now, the story isn't always good. For that matter, the game and the company aren't always good. :D

But it's those three elements that I look for in a gaming group.

Roleplaying is killing people and taking their stu... ...ooops, that's Munchkin. Sorry, kinda got confused there.

Roleplaying Game

A pastime in which the participants take on roles in an imaginary setting, with rules that regulate what is and is not possible in that setting. The rules being used to describe the roles, the setting, and how roles and setting interact.

And that is as concise as I can make it without making it so general 'roleplaying game' could be applied to most anything.

Hmmm, I couldn't vote for movie or book, because both of those feel pre-determined -- they start at one point and go to another; still, the games feel like both to a small extent, more like a book on the GM side of the screen, more like a movie on the other, as the GM has to have more background in the world if he is going to run it right. And the daydream doesn't seem right, because games are more interactive than merely introspective.

I went for social event, because that is a terribly important aspect of gaming for me. Other than that I would say "Other". Impromptu theatre, a bit of historical research, some standup comedy, a long wilderness hike, and a touch of "what did you whip up on the stove today?"

Meandering thoughts ;)

I'd like to quote my good friend and frontman of local Mobile band, Me and T (formerly Sweet Nothings) named Brett, a few hours after his first ever d20 session (in my Gamma World d20 game):

"Dude, I love roleplaying. It totally doesn't have any of the stigmas I've heard attached to it. It's like a movie, a novel, and a video game all at the same time."

I think that's the best way to put it I've ever heard.

No, of course not. Except for the fun factor.

I voted social event, reading a good book, and other. It's great fun getting together with my wife, brother, sister, and sometimes friends and spending quality time with each other. Being a DM allows me to "write" the book, but the main characters always do things I don't expect. It makes the "book" better because it stretches the game beyond the limitations of my own imagination by relying on three or more other imaginations. ;)

As for "Other or I don't understand", it's sort of the reverse of reading a good book, but goes hand in hand with it. As Sunglar stated, "Role-playing for me is storytelling. It is telling a story in a unique form where I do not control the action of the protagonists and while I as a DM set the stage, I am always surprised of where we as a group take it." That's the best description, in my book.
