If so many people didn't like to play elves (drow, etc.), so many people wouldn't complain about them.

Well, I'm sure if you'd post the poll with the inverse question (whats the best race?) you'd get alot of the same results.

Some races (particularly elves I suppose) tend to split people's opinions into one extreme or the other, while others (uh Half-Orcs for example) tend to fall through one way or the other.

If I'm the one doing the despising or mocking?

Even split between halflings and elves.

The one thing that really sold me on Eberron was that it managed to make those races interesting.

If you think Eberron made them interesting you should check out Iron Kingdoms by Privateer Press. They eliminated gnomes and halflings and sort of replaced them with a form of goblin with much more flavor. The elves are definitely changed, much more grim and hard-edged and with good reason, their gods are dying and dead and without them the race is doomed.

I think the "Drow hatred" comes mostly from those Drizzt wannabes. ;)

Oh, I don't have to think about it. I know very well that the Drizzt wannabes, combined with magic resistance and munchkiny abilities are the reasons behind drow hate.

Half-orc monks are great. One of my players always plays half-orc monks.

Heh, everyone has his/her own taste, isn't it? :p I just happen to find monks misplaced in the game unless it's entirely an oriental setting (ONE occasional monk walked from a far land is an interesting idea, but TWO is already boring IMO). Couple that least fav'd class of mine with the least fav'd race of mine and you get my least fav'd character, squared ;)

No problems of course with the groups who like it otherwise :)

I think I'll vote for Half-Orcs. The old cliche' of "unaccepted folks" by either race isn't nice at all anymore, not to mention the hint of coming from violent mating
What, exactly, is wrong with violent mating? :)

No offence, but that doesn't sound more interesting than Eberron's take.

If nothing else, I like that in Eberron there are multiple genuinely-different cultures within each race.

Yeah, well. The player in question is a fanatical martial artist IRL so it figures. (That is, he doesn't do very much besides working/studying and training martial arts.)

Albeit lately he seems to like monks less because they get so many funky powers that he doesn't agree with. So he tries even harder to get to play a beast. :p

GNOMES! Squash the little blighters.
Just glad Kender didn't appear in the PHB.
Maybe Drow. Ooh look I'm an elf but evil and 'cause I live underground and see no sunlight I've got the darkest tan ever. Sod off.
