What is THE NEXT BIG THING?

Next big thing? I'm terrible at prognostication, but...

I agree that minis will be part of it - but not just characters and monsters but terrain, dungeons, buildings, etc. as well. 3-D D&D.

Simplified core of rules - not that the game people wind up playing will routinely be any les complicated than it is now, but the core of it will be simplified.

The internet will factor in to a much greater extent. Just how I cannot see... the mists are closing in over the vision in the crystal ball... It may just be a saner rules reference arrangement than this moronic FAQ, Sage Advice, Errata, What-You-REALLY-Use stupidity. It may be v.1.0 of the Holy Grail of fully interactive online D&D games complete with 1st-person POV full-motion video dungeon and wilderness exploration, etc. (though I doubt that - the everybody-can-make-it technology and cost/commitment ratio just isn't there yet.

I dont think Mini's are the next big thing. I Think they are selling well now but I dont think they are going to cause a Magic the Gathering or Pokemon like surge. Miniatures have been around for years (as long as D&D if im not mistaken) in some form or another. I personally think they are more expensive to get into than roleplaying, and unless you are just using them for skirmish games then I dont see the current DDM game being used widely, unless they come out with a non-randomized version. Warhammer I believe is still the miniature king? Im not sure on that but If some other company comes to the table with a new and awesome Mini game I would expect Warhammer will have some new inexpensive game to compete.
Next big card game is Versus. Yu-gi-Oh will continue to be made but it has been dead for awhile now. Ive seen online stores and some local stores getting rid of the stuff cause they cant move it, while Magic, Pokemon and Versus still move in large quantities.

As for D&D. I really believe this new Star Wars game is a test for a simplified D&D. WOTC will see if this game does well and see if it is something they would like for a 4e. I think the Star Wars game will sell relativly well and the new system will be well recieved, but not for D&D. So they will either kill the idea on making 4e this new system or they will say "hey it works for star wars why not D&D."

I dont think though we are anywhere near some gaming revolution like what happened way back when. Nothing new and revolutionary enough to catch the mainstream has come out yet, or at least has been able to be marketed to kids so their gullible parents could buy it for them.

All games whether they be RPG's, board games or CCG's must have a balance issue to keep the game fair.

If D&D was released under a new edition and that balance issue was removed I think that it would be harmful to it. I would guess (ok, the D&D internet forums are not the be all and end of gamers, but call it intuition) that such a game system would drive players away, and/or make the game system just too unbalanced that it would not last too long.

All games? You have board games, card games, and roleplaying games. Which if these is not like the others? What is the big difference between roleplaying games on one hand, and board and card games on the other?

I was using them as an example just to say that games have to have a balance factor to keep them fair.

These threads on Ryan Dancey's predictions made me think of an idea for a new TCG. Unfortunately, I am not knowledgeable enough of TCGs in general to tell whether it would have any innovative mechanics, or whether it would just be ranked as another clone...

That'd be a move that would leave me behind.

In fact, it's the main reason I have zero interest in MMORPGs as it is.

Amen to that. If I have to deal with someone else's rule set that I can't change or alter, it annoys the hell out of me.

MMORPGs where you can either write up your own adventures using a point and click interface, or change specific rules in "your area?" Rewrite up the "Old School" or your favorite old or new module/world of your choice? A combonation of Neverwinter Nights and MMORPG, where you can invite your own friends into your own area? A virtual desktop with 3D avatars?

That actually might be something... The best features of tabletop, and the best features of MMORPG. I've never played an MMORPG, so I really don't know if something like that would be feasable. I'd like to port my favorite paper and pencil characters over to a world where they could do just about anything, interact with everybody else, and talk with NPCs.
