What is the original source for this awesome Lockwood painting?

It was the first pic of Mialee that I liked. Yup, love the references to the early days. I had noticed the map but not recognized it; very cool.

I think several are close enough to the Iconics to be tributes to them.

I want to play a kobold sorceror now. the githyanki looks cool also.

Personally, I like the ale-drinking beholder next to the mind flayer that's snacking on a brain. I also like the gnome with the chaingun crossbow, the githyanki, and the halfling (or is it a gnome?) in the back draping his arm over a red dragon's snout.

That's not a gnome with the crossbow bolt thrower, it is a Keeper, origanally from Planescape. You can tell by the goggles...plus Lockwood has paid homage to the great Tony DiTerlizzi with the blue tattoo, which Tony used extensively in his later Planescape work.

Isnt that him stealing the jewel eye?

Poster Todd, POSTER!! I cant believe WotC hasnt made this fine painting available as a large poster or Print. Does anyone know if they plan on having it as one in Dragon Mag?

I believe the original inspiration is from a scene from Cannon Ball Run, I might not be correct on that. Dom Deloise as the Beholder and Sammy D is the Gnome. I could be way off base on that.

Thanks,

It was available at the WotC 30th anniversary bash at GenCon as a poster. Let me see if Todd will have any of these available for sale for ya all. ;)

I have my doubts. Keepers are human-sized with pale skin and since they all look the same, I don't think they'd have tattoos. Their limbs transform into weapons, so I don't think it would use a gatling crossbow. Gnomes, however, are known for such gadgets.
There are only three "little people" in the picture, and since the cutpurse in the foreground is certainly a halfling that leaves only two others; the bard and the gatling guy. If the bard with the dragon is a halfling as well, that leaves only one person left to represent gnomes. If it were a keeper, that would leave no gnomes at all, and I don't think they'd leave them out of a picture like this.
The picture is supposed to represent the familiar stereotypes of D&D; things that scream Dungeons & Dragons. As such, I don't think Lockwood would choose to put something as obscure as a Keeper in the pic.
Still though, Keepers are cool. ;)
And I... am long-winded.
