We have very different playstyles. I burn through scrolls way too fast to have more than a few on hand. Since short rests are never guaranteed and I never know how long it'll be until we set camp, I tend to use scrolls first and save my spell slots as a last resort.
shouldn't that be other way around?

you might get your spell slots back really quickly after the fight or you may not, but scrolls are gone 100%.
that is why you save scrolls and burn slots.

I know why other players do this, but I don't. And I don't recommend it to new players, either. It's true that a scroll is 100% gone as soon as it's used...but a scroll that sits in my character's inventory and never gets used is worse: it might as well have never existed at all.

If I were to rank the spellcasting classes from Easiest > Hardest to Play:
Warlock > Sorcerer > Wizard > Bard > Cleric > Druid
we started one campaign at 5th level with bonus 1st level feat as normal for most tables;

5th level tiefling aberrant mind sorcerer with Fey touched and Shadow touched feats:
7 cantrips,
18 spells known, out of those 6 have additional 1/day cast and 6 have special sorcery point cast.

and that in the hands of a new player 1st time playing D&D, hehe.

I mean, if the scroll is the only thing for the situation, then OFC you use the scroll, but if I have fireball prepared and have a fireball scroll, I will 1st use a spell slot, unless I may need other 3rd level spell prepared and I don't have that spell on scroll.

Life cleric or Evoker wizard are real simple to play.
Only if the evoker takes only attack spells like fireball. If he takes utility and spells from other schools(and he will), then he is not really simple to play. I've never in 41 years seen someone only take attack spells.

A wizard has to know when to use a slot in combat, and when to save it for a later encounter. He has to know when to use a spell for utility, or when to save it for combat or another tight spot. He has to prepare the right spells for the environment. Slot management for the adventuring day, exploration and social is critical, and not simple.

every caster can take "simpler" and/or complex spells.
I was talking about extra features.

slot management?
just blast everything and continue spamming cantrips and keep whining for a Long rest, hehehe.

Sure, you can make a wizard simple if you nerf yourself big time. The extra features are not what makes the wizard complex. It's the spellcasting. You can't ignore the spellcasting and just declare it a simple class.

A wizard that does that is not playing a wizard very well. Even evokers are a lot more than just blasty blasty.

I'm not ignoring it, I just say that wizard can be made that it is simple to play and evoker best fits on "simple wizard" chassis.

That much I can agree with. If you really want to make a simple wizard, you go evoker and just pick magic missile, shocking grasp, etc. and never mind any utility or attack spells that do stuff other than damage.

I've never seen anyone actually do that, though.
