What is your favorite D&D monster?

If I can pick 2, it would be Trolls and Ogre Mages. Both of those are monsters that I've used at some point in nearly every campaign I've run. I just can't seem to get enough of them.

I had clicked on this thread originally with the intent of posting Illithids.

But then, someone reminded me of Kobolds. I liked them in older editions. I've run Tucker's Kobolds on just about every group of players I've DMed for. I've had Kobolds ambush them in their sleep and taken advantage of every tactical advantage I could think of. When 3e came out, I boggled at the sudden change of focus-- but I learned to revel in it, too. I love the Draconic heritage. I love the juxtaposition of noble, terrible ancestry and their current, diminished state.

And I've recently read the Kobolds of Khorvaire article by Keith Baker.

So, yeah. Make Mine Kobold.

As an aside, the gelatinous cube was the victim of one of the worst changes in 3.5. I mean, G-cubes have always been 10' x 10', in order to fit the standard dungeon size. So, when they made 3.0, the cube became Huge, in order to have that facing. Then, when making 3.5, they kept it at Huge, which meant its space changed to 15'x15' - so now the gelatinous cube no longer fits in most dungeons!

I guess you haven't checked the 3.5 errata file recently ....

what, no mention of the jack-o-bear or dragosnails yet?

seriously, it's not a proper session if there isn't a golem in there somewhere. also monsters that attack PC equipment are a favourite of mine - for real player fear you simply cannot beat a rust dragon...

Oh the pain! One person mentions a monster from Minions, and still no love for the poor Swamp Hellion. ;)

Uh, because the secret eater, seeder, hearth horror, vapor bore, polar and ebon spider (plus more- I am not going to dig the book out for spellings) are cooler IMO? Anyways I really don't care for a critter based on a wrestling move.

Maybe one of the reasons I like the Beholder and Mind Flayer so much is because they are pretty original. When D&D first came out so many of the creatures were either from some mythology, ripped off from somewhere or just 'giant' versions of something else. The Beholder and Mind Flayer both kind of stand out (to me) as pretty interesting and unique creatures.
