What is your favorite D&D monster?

One of my favorite monsters is the aballin of Forgotten Realms fame. I don't know if anyone here ever played through the old edition module, "the Twisted Tower of Ashaba", but there was an aballin in the caverns below. Ever since then it's been a favorite of mine - needless to say, I was very glad when they updated it in the Monsters of Faerun.

I discovered D&D with 3e, so reading through the MM and the original CC were my first exposures to D&D monsters.

Monsters I liked so much I knew I needed to include them in my campaign include:
  • Choker
  • Dragonne
  • Kobold
  • Sphinx
  • Savant Hydra (CC)

Later, I bought the Psionics Handbook because, upon flipping through it in a FLGS, I saw... the Blue. Blue goblins with psionic powers. And a +4 Wisdom. I had a major NPC that sprang in existence. And so I took the Psionics Handbook back home.

They're also the reason I haven't bought the EPH. Blues have been nerfed. No longer a Wis bonus. And a Cha penalty! I'd have to either give munchkined out ability scores to my blue, or to rework its concept.

I've alwyas liked the Saughuin (sp?). Its something about that whole creature from the Black Lagoon thing going on. The old 2nd edition book on them is still one of the best books ever. :D

Speaking of Aboleths -
Anyone remeber the issue number for the advanced aboleths artical in dragon?
or what the cover looks like? I know I have the issue, but its burried. It was 2nd ed btw.

Varies depending on the campaign but I tend to enjoy those types of monsters that can level up and have their own plots and agendas going.

One of the things I really enjoy about 3rd edition is how easy it is to advance orcs and other humanoids as opposed to 1st ed and early 2nd ed days.

Of course having d20 Call of Cthulhu gives me plenty of 'Eldritch' horror too. Man, I iwsh that book had come out after Deities & Demigods and 3.5 so it could be as up to date as possible. Chaosium is coming out with a monster book and of course, no d20 stats. Bah!

Ecology of the Aboleth- 131, and it is 1st ed.

I can't wait to see how much Lords of Madness have on them.

Thanks DMH :) Its not like I havent got notes cribbed from the tunnel design artical in my Campaign folder, or converted the mini-adventure to 3.5 from this same issue.
March 1988 was a good issue.

The problem with LoM is I am sure that they will present the magical versions of mindflayer and Aboleth instead of the Psionic ones. (XPH) So I can use the society and cultural notes, but have to convert the crunch.
