What is your reaction to the Ravnica news?

I just realised that Ravnica was basically a bad copy of Planescape, .

That's like saying that apple pie is just a bad copy of pizza. They both have crust, sauce, topping on top, are cooked in an oven and served in slices. See, same thing!

The idea is fine, but not very original - Ptolus got there first...

It may well have some usable stuff that can be transported into an 'imperial' sort of homebrew setting, so I will probably get hold of a copy for mining purposes.

I'm excited. Because now I can finally play a game where I'm associated with House Dimir where I don't have to use milling mechanics.

Also I really want to see a Simic focused subclass for the Wizard or Sorcerer. The transmutation wizard school really doesn't fit their flavour of transmutation.

I purchased the first Ravnica enovel and I find it's starting to pull me into the setting in a way I wasn't to begin with.

The problem is most of us haven't really been invested in the setting, buy the novels and watch the trailers before you decide, invest in it and see if by that point you want more. The enovels are roughly $6 Canadian, probably less in American dollars.

Which makes the furor around this seem really strange. I mean, folks, it's a setting. Use it. Don't use it. It is a game book. It isn't worth the drama.

I feel like the drama is because some people have been waiting for 20 years to yell "Look, WotC is just going to turn D&D into Magic, they don't care about D&D at all!" and they've finally got the chance.

I'm disappointed not because it will bed product, it will be good for sure, but for spending company resources on this rather on more "core" d&d stuff.

There is still tons of stuff for FR, Ebberon, Dark Sun, hell, even modern or future tech settings.

It appears the primary company resources being used on this were from the MtG side, principally employees who used to work on D&D back in the 3e days but were moved to MtG, and who are now back temporarily on the D&D side for just this project. So no loss of D&D company resources to do this, just a gain. And to me getting James Wyatt back, even temporarily, is a huge gain.

My group mostly plays Homebrew settings, so the only settings that appeal to me are the ones with nostalgic value from the games of my youth. Both Eberron and Ravnica are passes for me.
