Yeah, I'll also be starting at 1st level. I am interested in experiencing gameplay from the ground up and testing to see how well their design goals have been met (specifically, how well said design goals work at my table).

With a new system, 1st level seems the obvious way to go. If it were a totally new game, like C&C or True20, I would do the same. I would not think of starting a new system off higher.

And yes, that does mean I think 4E will be a totally new system.

No. Don't even need to think about this: I'll start at level 1. I want to see for myself if the promise of the sweet spot being at level 1-30 holds true.

1st.

The major difference is going to be in character abilities, so starting at 15th won't give the experience of learning the abilities in an orderly fashion.

Cheers!

Exactly.

Besides, I always preferred low-levels. It's much more challenging, as low-level monsters aren't exactly over-abundant, and most players have been slaughtering goblins and kobolds since forever, so it takes much more to make adventures at those levels interesting.

Having said that, I really wish they get high levels right this time. In 2e, it took forever to reach high levels, and in 3(.5)e they, IMO, sucked (a bookkeeping fest, where your character is essentially just the sum of his magic items :P) [and I realise there are people who enjoy playing high, or even epic, level characters in current edition, I'm just saying it doesn't work for me].

Regards.

I prefer levels 3 to 12, but that was in 3.X. I might have different preferences in 4e, especially if they get rid of the whole "starting with 6 hit points and goblins do 1d6 damage" thing that afflicted 1st level characters in previous editions. So I put down 1.

I voted first. I've been starting 3.5 campaigns at 2nd level but with 0 XP so you'd go a while before hitting 3rd level... Just for the survivability.

I don't know if that's necessary now... We'll have to see after it ships and we play...

That's the most brilliant idea I've seen today. I can't believe it never occurred to me.
