What level spell

szilard

First Post
I have an idea for a spell, but I really have no clue at what level to peg it:

Rough relevant info:

Magic Relay
Target: either a point in space or an object (~ 1 cubic foot/level?)
Duration: longish (either 10 min or 1 hr per level)
Description: essentially, the spell would create a virtual line of effect with the target that would be maintained for the duration regardless of the location of the target with respect to the caster post-casting.

Thoughts?

What would be the purpose? To be able to cast through the relay and use the target as follow up spell's point of origin? Example: Set up a Magic Relay 500ft away from castle walls... as the horde approaches cast Fireball through the relay and start the range from that point instead of on the castle wall where you are standing? In that case, I would probably put it at 100' per level for 1 hour per level as a 4th level spell. Though I'd probably add that if the Magic Relay is destroyed before the connection is severed then the caster takes 1d6 per level, non-lethal, backlash damage.

Hope this helps,

EDIT: Hardness and hitpoints of a Magic Relay would be determined by the cost to create it. It can be something as simple as a Quarterstaff embedded into the ground though it can be sundered very easily. Or perhaps a 6' tall, 1' wide Mithril Column. Either way the material cost of the spell can change which adds to it's versatility.

EDIT 2: After further review 4th level seems about right power wise. It allows you to extend the range of most spells cast in the next few hours without having to metamagic them. A 4th level spell should be able to power that feat.

That might be another possible use, though I wasn't necessarily thinking that it would have an effect upon range.

I was thinking more along the lines of using it to cast a spell somewhere when you don't have line of effect.

A simple example: Someone comes to the door of your tower when you are in the lab? Your Alarm spell goes off, and you use Open/Close through your door-relay.

Something as simple as this I would allow with either a cantrip or 1st level spell... Unseen Servant could do this... I always jump the gun and look for a military use for spells ;).

Oh - there would be many military uses for this. Cast it on an object and bury it. Instant land mine.

Give someone a token that you've cast this on. Teleport 100 miles away. Cast a spell on the token - attack spell, buff spell, illusion spell, whatever.

Sounds like casting a spell through a Scry... Elements of Magic has rider spells that can do just that. I'll review that book tonight and let you know what I find tomorrow, best alternative I can offer at this time.

Hopefully helpful,

Ring Gates can do this, I think.

You'd still need line of sight to direct the spells, right? So you'd need to Scry the target or be spying from afar or something?

Seems cool for an ambush.

DM: "From behind you! It's a fireball!"
PCs: "We run up to the cloaked figure!"
DM: "From the figure's unmoving, outstretched hand shoots a lightning bolt!"
PC: "I charge-attack the figure!"
DM: "You sunder the scarecrow cleanly in two!"
PC: "... urp?"

Right - if you need to direct the spell, you'd have to be able to see it somehow. If it was targeting the object or a point in space centered on the object, you wouldn't.

How about this... Make a MetaMagic Feat: Magical Relay.

Magic Relay is a cantrip that can be cast on any object, it last for 1 day per caster level.

As Move action you can shift your vision to "see" from any of the Magic Relays you have created as if you were standing there. (Remember there is no facing so you would "see" all around you, limited only by your normal vision.)

You may now cast any spell you can perpare through the Magic Relay. Spells prepared in this manner uses up a spell slot two levels higher than the spell’s actual level and gain the Metamagic Descriptor: Relay Readied.

Just a thought,
William Holder
