D&D 5E What Makes 5E "5E"?

We did character generation last night for my new campaign and we discovered another thing that is a strong 5E-ism: the common straight up nonsensical and/or contradictory writing of spells, feats, class abilities and rules. Lol.

To me, 5E is:

  • A game about conversations, rolls of the dice, and combat
  • d20 + mods, advantage/disadvantage, adding dice for other mods instead of raw numbers
  • Proficiency bonus, which contradicts the above by being added various rolls too and serving other purposes
  • STATBLOCKS STATBLOCKS STATBLOCKs, hard to change, hard to create, hard to customize, not entirely sure if ever worth it
  • A huge number of spells, and spells are your default powers and tools for most characters
  • FREEDOM to improv rules
