What monsters would you reall like to play?

Methinks some of the folks at WotC are engaged in trying to find a better way to balance monsters-as-PC's than the "paper tiger" condition that LA's can result in. So I think we're much more likely to see a new way to do it unvieled instead of more in the same mold. Complete Psionic gave us a preview of the way they're thinking....

I really really liked the Complete Psionic approach.

Man, I never wanted to do this in the first place. I...I wanted to be a..

...MIND FLAYER!!!!! :)

Oh Im, an illithid and I'm OK,
I sleep all night and I work all day

Chorus: He's an illithid and he's OK
He sleeps all night and he works all day.

Etc.

Just out of curiosity, what would you change?. Nimblewrights are already intelligent and potentially free-willed (if their creators are dead). I've used them as NPCs (associated with House Cannith in Eberron) as-written, or as-updated, anyway, without any issues.

They're 3.0, so a few changes there (eg spiff 'em so they have the right number of skill points and feats - very important when you want to give them class levels! Even if you have to apply (B) to many of the feats). Boost the CR by about 3 points (it's overpowered, but fortunately the overpoweredness is mostly uniform), cut the SR until it's 10 to 12 + CR (I don't subscribe to the theory that constructs should be immune to magic), and give them Weapon Finesse!

I'm not sure what to do about magicking up their weapons - should they just pay to get their rapiers enhanced, or should they get the amulet of mighty fists?

I'm not normally very fond of playing monsters as characters. I do however think of new character possibilities often. Two "monstrous" types that have crossed my mind of late include a half-ogre fighter and a cantaur (class undetermined).

Thri-kreen (aka Darksun Thri-kreen) are a blast to play. The book gave such good examples and a sense of style that I liked.

The other creature I like the idea of doing is another Darksun creature- The Tembo. Anything THAT hated has to be fun to play.

I've played a few interesting characters over the years...

Centaur Bard/Ranger
Awakened Baboon Rogue/Fighter/Assassin with wings - think those evil monkeys from 'The wizard of Oz'
Doppleganger Rogue
Minotaur Barbarian

All were great fun. Right now, I'd really be into playing a Half-ogre (though not as written), a giant of some sort (with SS progression), a Lizardman-type character (maybe a druid or shaman) or something native to the underdark (a chitine, possibly).

I don't have Savage Species, but from what I've seen I think it was actually a great idea (I'm not about the balance).

I would definitely play humanoids, monstrous humanoids, undead and outsiders. For more strange things, I doubt I could. However I think that the biggest difficulty is to roleplay monsters rather than just "play". I am afraid most gamers would just play a giant because of the big Strength or a Dragon because the coolness and the abilities, but would probably roleplay everything in the same way as a human character.

Libris Mortis offered some undead monstrous classes, but there was no such attempt for Lords of Madness...

No desire to play a half-farspawn, then? ;)

I want to play a Mummy. In the proper scenario, they could be very cool.

I wanna play a fricken' Gnoll. I don't know why, but I've always liked gnolls, moreso than goblinoids and orcoids.

That's because Gnolls are cooler than Goblinoids and Orcoids. Orcoids? Anyway, Gnolls are cooler. Although we just killed a couple of Gnolls in our game today. Poor things.

Gnoll would be my second choice. :)

I'd like to go gnoll too. Dunno why. Just think gnolls are cool. Maybe it's because orcs and goblinoids have been done to death.

oh and then a Gnoll

Y'know, you people are only giving me encouragement here. :D I've been working on a homebrew campaign world where Gnolls are the main antagonist (no orcs or hobgoblins), and are a playable PC race as well.

The trouble being they have such a high level adjustment in the core rules (+2). I'm trying to figure out a way to make them a playable +0 race without gimping them too badly...
