What non-4e would you play if there was no OGL at all?

If no OGL alternative existed, what would you play now?

Well, this for those who are not interested in 4e, and will instead choose Pathfinder, True20, C&C, whatever.

I don't know if I'll be using 4e, but I'm not specifically going with some other OGL product, either. Nor am I sure why your restricting your question to only those people.

I have never seen a particular need to pick one and only one game to go with. It isn't like I'm marrying a game system. I have an entire bookshelf full of RPGs, and I suspect I'll pick up more as time goes along - and I'll play those too.

I'd go with some other game entirely.

I mean, I've got my RC book, and I've still got my Red and Blue Boxes too. That's fine if I feel like some classic D&D.

But for rpg play in general? Another game.

What game?

Man, I can't list 'em all. But at this point, there's so many games out there that it's not like there's a lack. Here's some off the top of my head:

Agon
Angel
BESM
Beyond the Supernatural
Earthdawn
Faery's Tale
Hero's Banner
Heroquest
Iron Gauntlets
Justifiers
Marvel SAGA (card based)
Marvel Universe
Nightbane
OVA
Palladium Fantasy
PDQ games (Ninja Burger, Questers of the Middle Realms, Truth & Justice, Dead Inside, Zorcerer of Zo)
Providence
Qin
Rifts
Secret of Zir'An
Spirit of the Century (Note: it's been released under OGL, but is a Fudge derivative and Fudge had a completely different licensing agreement. Fudge and SotC both using OGL now doesn't invalidate them since the original Fudge agreement pre-dates the OGL)
Wasteworld
Talislanta
The Shadows of Yesterday (has a version which pre-dates the 2nd edition Fudge based one. Also, Fudge use would still be possible without OGL, see note about Spirit of the Century)
Witch Hunter: Invisible World

Sorry none of my games are on your list. With the exception of Savage Worlds, I'm not interested in 'em. Been there, done that, moved on.

Soooooo..... yeah. 4E being OGL or not (or even 3.x for that matter) really doesn't affect my rpg life one whit.

And yes, I do own all of 'em, except Earthdawn. :)

If the OGL didn't exist it wouldn't affect me at all. I'd be playing exactly what I'm playing now, which is OD&D and WFRP (with maybe a 4e game coming in the next months or so).

The thing is, that such OGL games do exist solely because the guy who first wrote the d20 OGL license, didn't do his job very well. He left a bad-wording / loophole that let publishers use the OGL to write their own independent systems that can now exist on their own without any concern for GSL and such. .

Where did you get the idea that it was a mistake? One point touted about the OGL was that, unlike the d20 license, you could design a game character generation rules with the trade-off being that you could not use the d20 logo. That doesn't sound like a loophole to me.

I have never seen a particular need to pick one and only one game to go with. It isn't like I'm marrying a game system.
True, but myself I do like a long campaign with development of characters, etc., and don't have the time to play several different games. So, I would probably chose one game and play a full campaign with it.

If there were no OGL, I would be playing

DND 3.5 with the same third party products.
Rolemaster or HARP
DC Heroes or Advanced V&V instead of M&M for superheroes
GURPS
Alternity
Top Secret SI

The combination of Baldur's Gate 2 and the excitement surrounding the OGL coming right on its coat-tails is what brought me back into D&D after a 10 year hiatus.

I might not be playing at all if either of those hadn't happened.

If there were no OGL, I'd be playing 4e, enthusiastically. While 3rd edition was fine for a while, the more I looked, the less I liked and soon enough, I got tired of houseruling everything and its cousin.

If I wasn't playing either of those, I'd be playing Dark Heresy and/or Mage:The Awakening.

Star Wars Saga Edition. Assuming it still turned out like it did, which it might not have without the OGL to give the designers their previous experience.

I like 4e, but if my OGL choices disappeared, I would go with Savage Worlds, 7th Sea, and any of the indie games I could get my friends to try.

In a Wicked Age would be one of those.

Mind you, I wouldn't mind trying a high level 1st ed AD&D game either.
