D&D 5E What PC species should return for 5ed?

Vanaras can be renamed easily if it was really necessary. Maybe we see in the future a vanara bard singing "Rock DJ".

Today gnomes are more popular thanks that famous warlord with a crossbow saying "my name is Tyrion Lannister, you killed my father prepare to die!"

Ardlings could be wellcome if the design of racial traits and lore is right. I would add special marks, rays, runes, sigils or taints in the skin to show they aren't like the ordinary furries. Maybe they are the furry version of aasimars, or the celestial-touched version of antropomorphic animal humanoids, or descendents of guardinals.

The PC species are like selling dressing or Halloween costumes. Always there is somebody who wants to wear a different style.

I really don't think the Custom lineage would work for a Shardmind.
Well not with that attitude!

I've used the Custom Lineage rules to make all kinds of playable characters over the years: half-vampires, sirens, a scarecrow, a rose blight, a half-dryad, a satyr (pre-Theros)...it's a lot more robust than people give it credit for.

Or to put it another way: if one of my players wanted to roll up a Shardmind character, I wouldn't wait for Wizards of the Coast to define it for me...I would just pull out my copy of Tasha's and make it happen.

look i just cant see dragonborn and tieflings wandering around my quasi-medieval gygax-tolkein-CAS-Leiber funland hitting goblins with a stick

what breaks your vibe? Grell paladin-monks?
Can't you see a dude who is red and has horns hit goblins with a stick?
can you at least imagine the apple and rotate it inside your head?
It's probably a boring answer, but it's also an honest one: I don't think more species are needed. I think we already have more than we could ever need, and even if we didn't, we have the framework in Tasha's to fill in any gap that we could imagine.

I both agree and disagree we have too many subpar options or bloated sub-variations (too many types of elf)
we need consolidation on some cool ideas and to replace some bad ideas with better ones

while i don't object to the concept of custom lineage it's execution is far too shallow to my liking to be able to sufficiently model various species with enough nuance to my satisfaction, however i would also note that i also consider some of the designed species to be a bit light on mechanical depth for that matter too.
