What rules will NWN support?

The FAQ on www.neverwinternights.com is kind of contradictory when it comes to rules used in the game. At one point it states that the shipped version does not contain feats; at other points it talks about choosing feats for your character. Anyone know what rules are supported by NWN?

What this means is that NWN has Feats in the game. But it does not have every Feat from the PHB. One big group missing are the Meta-magic Feats. Bioware has taken what they could from 3E to make a playable D&D game. They are staying as close to 3E as possible. Infact, they have had to add a new skill called Parry to help their engine work properly.

Well, we just have to wait for a few more days to see just much like 3E, NWN feels like. From all I've seen, NWN is going to rock! But I have been looking forward to this gameesince before 3E came out. The only reason I looked at 3E (I was plying a different system) was because of NWN.

NWN is 3E D&D, but it's a bit different, in order to make it work as a computer game.

There's no flying, jumping, swimming, riding or climbing. This disables a few spells and skills, and even character abilities, like the paladin's mount. But classes have been rebalanced with additional abilities, different skills, etc.

Certain feats are out, such as item creation, improved initiative, the mounted feats, and a few others. And a few combat feats, such as Power Attack and Expertise have been changed to make them easier to use.

That said, this is definitely D&D, no mistaking. As soon as I get it, I'll start recreating Keep on the Borderlands as my group's first multiplayer foray into NWN, just as it was my original group's first foray into D&D almost 20 years ago.

Thanks guys, it's all a little clearer now. Do you think they will support certain feats and skills in new supplements? Like psionics, for instance?

BioWare has stated that they will add things as they able to. It all depends on how well the game sells, and how hard something is to add to the game. Since NWN has gone gold, I think we can see a few expansions. But what will be in them only Bio knows for sure.

Myself, I have never been big on Psionics (but then, I don't use Monks in my campaigns either). I don't think it would be all that hard to add Psionics, so we may see them. I would rather see a way to deal with Prestige Classes. That will open up more possibilities.

NO MOUNTS???

No mounts. No riding. No climbing. It sounds lke a bad playground already. :(

Not that it'll deter me from picking it up. Just that it's not the perfect replacement for the PnP game... yet.

The problem with skills such as Climb and Swim is what's commonly called feature creep - they could put them in, but it would require a significant alteration to the program which could delay the game equally significantly. And while we fans may be content to wait, investors are not.

As for riding (and incidentally, cloaks) is that it would require a lot more models to be made - again significantly setting back the game. Perhaps in an expansion such things will be possible, when they have the time, btu they had to draw the line somewhere, and there was no way that all the art was going to get done.
