14 posts into the thread, and the flamewar commences ...

14 posts is okay. I was hopeful that we would get to at least 20, but whatever.
:\
Oh, no, no, it started 7 posts in. A post of truly scintillating brilliance too, on par with "rollplaying vs roleplaying".

My buddy skipped 2e and never really got the hang of 3e. He got the idea that monsters have levels and it pretty much stopped there. So he tossed 20 kobolds with a kobold leader who was a 3rd level fighter at our 4th level party.
What's the problem? That encounter sounds like a EL 6 or a bit more. It's hard, but not unreasonable. I've thrown a CR 9 at a 5th level party not long ago; two of them got killed, a third went into negatives, and they had to use all of their spells as well as several potions and wand charges, but they did it. Was I providing "1e feel" in 3.5, without knowing it? If so, why is it called "1e feel" at all?

Except that the Call of Cthulhu investigators have the sense to run away. :)

"3rd edition rules, 1st edition lack of frickin' good sense to get the hell out of the frickin' TOMB OF @#$%ING HORRORS...why do you THINK they named it that??"

Okay, everyone, STOP.

Don't like 1st edition? Then leave the thread stage left. This is not the place for edition wars, and I don't want hijacking. *pokes Curtis* Clear?

Okay, back to 1st edition feel. . . but without the insults, please.

No fiendish half-troll half-fire elemental illithid rogues/Ninjas of the Crescent Moon, particularly as player characters.

We used the cavalier and anti-paladin out of the pages of Dragon. I think they were worse. :D

Mind you, bashing 1st ed as being inferior to later editions is like bashing an oxcart for being inferior to a Dodge Ram truck. You need to have the oxcart, from a line of development standpoint. Yes, 1st ed D&D seems extremely illogical by the viewpoint of the modern gamer. Forgive it. The first game designers were literaly inventing a new hobby, and were clearly more concerned with flavor than mechanics. What modern game design allows for is refinement in how we game and the systems we use. But you naturaly need to crawl before you walk. Now if the scorn is for those who would ratehr play older editions, thats a horse of a different color.

First edition feel is ment as an appeal to nostalgia. Its human nature to look back and imagine that once upon a time, things were better because they were different. If such were not the case, the Greeks wouldnt have dreamed of Atlantis.

I started gaming in the late 70's and I have no idea what this means.

Can someone fill me in.?

to me it means placing an emphasis on stats.

with the introduction of the Supplements... Greyhawk in particular... D&D started going towards more power.. more emphasis on squeezing extra power ups out of stats.

and weapon selection.

and Prestige Classes.. like the Paladin.

with the introduction of other classes in The Strategic Review and other optional rules it naturally led to 1edADnD.

i fought it as long as i could... but the players wanted their powerups. they wanted d4 Magic-users. They wanted 9th lvl spells. they wanted +3 to hit with their 18/00 str.

edit: cuz i just saw PKitty's post.

I'm not sure if EL 6 is right, but even assuming it is, 21 critters aren't the same as a single CR 6. In any case, it was a decisive TPK.
