What to Polymorph other into?

What would be a good race to polymorph other into?

By good I mean the character is still able to go into towns without being killed on sight and can fit into dungeons.

I had a Mage reincarnated into a Brown Bear and want a form that can cast spells but has good physical attributes that I could use.

My favorite forms are grin (kind of sprite) and troll or giants. Grins can fly, have a dex of 18 and are small, while they still can cast spells. Trolls have good attacks and reach, and you can still cast spells

What I'm looking for is creatures with a good Dex and maybe natural armor.

A creature that would help augment a Wizard.

A wiz reincarnated into a brown bear yuck. We had a ranger/rogue reincarnated into a brown bear, and dude he kicked butt. I think he had like a 36 str, and then we sold his equipment, and then we made some custom equipment for his new form and he had a 40 str. But for a wizard that's tough I'd look for something with mental penalties since those wont change, but beware even good stat creatures you get the nomral stats for so you likely wont get much more than a 12 or 14 in and stat. Personally I'd go with something small, maybe a pixie(or whatever fey has wings) you get the ac bonus for size but you can naturally fly so your low movement isn't as much as a penalty. Hey the one benefit is as a brown bear your con jumped up a bunch, and your hps should start getting real good soon.

You might also want to look into the natural spell casting feat in MoTW which allows you to cast spells in alternate forms.

Under the polymorph other spell it says extremly high speeds for certian creatures are the result of magical ability, so they are not granted by this spell.

Does that mean I would or would not get the flying speed of a pixie? they fly 60 (good)?

As I understand it, over a 60 land move is considered magical while over a 120 is considered magical for flying. YMMV.

You should definitely be sure to look at the current official Polymorph Other spell. It is in Tome & Blood, Dragon #280, and here, at Eric's old Black Pages (the only place online, ASFAIK).

I think Grig is one of the best for a mage, though one of the smallest dragons could be cool as well (as they're able to cast spells, as well).

Of course if you Polymorph into a troll, you could multiclass as a fighter.
